DAY 1
Begin your trip at Audra State Park in Barbour and Upshur counties. This park is a secluded, yet scenic, gem making it the anchor point for RV travel through West Virginia. Bring along a kayak to paddle down the Middle Fork River, and head to the Alum Cave for scenic views along the cave’s ledge. Don’t worry, there’s a boardwalk for those looking for a milder adventure. Once you’ve had your fair share of nature, head to nearby Elkins for a taste of local culture and small-town charm.
DAY 2
Up next, take a scenic drive through the Monongahela National Forest on your way to Wagota State Park. Make sure to stop at Spruce Knob, West Virginia’s highest peak, for a hike and breathtaking views.
Once you arrive at Watoga, you’ll find yourself in a 10,000-acre mountain oasis in Pocahontas County. Hike, swim, fish and boat to your heart’s content. When you’re ready to hit the hay, snatch up a spot at one of the park’s two campgrounds: Riverside or Beaver Creek. Both campgrounds have electric hook-ups and central bathhouses with hot showers and coin-operated laundry. You can camp at Watoga from April through early December when deer hunting season closes. Make a reservation if you roll in during the summer — the park gets very busy!
DAY 3
Hawk Campground is located in the heart of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests in the Allegheny Mountains. The higher elevation keeps the area cool during the hot summer months, but the best time to visit is during spring when it is brimming and blooming with wildflowers. The area is scattered with prime hiking trails, most of which have plenty of shade for those long walks. If you want to set up camp and explore the forests, or if you are backpacking through and just need a spot to pitch a tent for the night, this is the perfect mountain escape for you.
