THOMAS RHETT Thomas Rhett scored his first No. one hit in 2013 with “It Goes Like This," introducing a sound that mixed the southern swagger of county music with pop hooks, R&B grooves, soulful strut, and the anything-goes attitude of rock. WITH SPECIAL GUESTS BRETT YOUNG and MIDLAND Brett Charles Young is an American country pop singer and songwriter. Brett is currently touring with his band which includes lead guitarist Sam Davis, drummer Billy Hawn, guitarist Matt Ferranti, and bass guitarist Noah Needleman. Midland is an American country music group formed in 2016 in Dripping Springs, Texas, consisting of Mark Wystrach (lead vocals), Cameron Duddy (bass guitar, background vocals), and Jess Carson (lead guitar, background vocals). In addition to their roles in the band, Wystrach is an actor and model, and Duddy is a music video director. The band has released one studio album, On the Rocks, which has accounted for three charted singles on the Billboard country music charts: "Drinkin' Problem", "Make a Little" and "Burn Out". The band's musical style can be defined as neotraditionalist country.

BKO Quintet’s music is born from a meeting between five established artists. This gathering provides a journey into the heart of the contemporary Mali. BKO is a power quintet from BAMAKO Associating the guitar of griots with the lute of Bambara hunters had never been undertaken before in the Malian music universe. It is indeed two opposite worlds that BKO have decided to bring up together in order to develop a resolutely urban music style rooted in secular tradition.

Capital City Challenge Triathlon – Run, Row, Ride

Welcome to the Capital City Challenge! The race consists of a 4.2 mile run, a 4.2 mile row, and a 16.8 mile bike ride all along the banks of the Kanawha River. Individuals and groups of two or three are all encouraged to participate. This unique yet competitive event is designed for competitors of all fitness and skill levels. This family-friendly challenge features music, kids' activities, and great door prizes. Solo and team entries are welcome. THE COURSE The order of the race is RUN (4.2 miles from Magic Island to Daniel Boone Park); ROW (4.2 miles from Daniel Boone Park to Magic Island); RIDE (16.8 miles all on paved roads - a 3 loop course from Magic Island to Veazey Street and back to Magic Island - then repeat). The Start-Finish is at Magic Island which is next to the I-64 bridge along the Kanawha River.

West Virginia State Grappling Championships

Part of SportsFest. Open To ALL competitors from any gym or state. Adult, Masters, & Children’s Gi & No Gi Divisions. On Saturday, August 18th, 2018 Charleston, West Virginia will, once again, host the official state Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Submission Wrestling State Championships as part of the “West Virginia Games.” The WV Games is a huge event that takes place on Magic Island, which is located on the Kanawha River in the capital of West Virginia and offers a scenic backdrop to a flurry of athletic competitions and events. This is a family friendly event and we encourage all of our competitors to bring their friends and families so they can enjoy all of the other events and activities during the tournament.

Camille Saint-Saëns: Cello Concerto No. 1 Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 with area choruses Lawrence Loh, conductor Gabriel Cabezas, cello The Oregonian once described Gabriel Cabezas as “an intense player who connects to music naturally, without artifice, and brings a singing line to the cello.” Cabezas combines a superb technique, intellectual curiosity and a pioneering musical spirit to his work and has appeared as a soloist with some of America’s finest orchestras, including those of Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Nashville, New York, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh. Cabezas’ appearance is made possible by a partnership with Astral Artists. Gary Fry, composer GARY FRY, COMPOSER Gary Fry is an Emmy-winning Chicago-based composer with a passion for working with young people, particularly in choral music. The WVSO commissioned Fry to write a special arrangement featuring the WVSO and the Appalachian Children’s Chorus.

Headlining with the WVSO, Tony DeSare will deliver a fresh take on old-school classics in a critically-acclaimed tribute to Frank Sinatra that includes song like Fly Me to the Moon, One for My Baby, The Summer Wind, Luck Be a Lady, Witchcraft, and My Way.

Program: Jennifer Higdon: blue cathedral Jean Sibelius: Violin Concerto in D minor Brahms: Symphony No. 2 in D Major Lawrence Loh, conductor Nikki Chooi, violin The Calgary Herald described Violinist Nikki Chooi as “richly expressive and technically assured.” The New York Times said he is “vigorous and colorful.” This 28-year-old has performed with symphonies across the globe. Jennifer Higdon, composer JENNIFER HIGDON, COMPOSER Jennifer Higdon is one of America’s most acclaimed composers and a Grammy Award winner who was once hailed by the Washington Post as having “a keen ear, an innate sense of form and a generous dash of pure esprit.” Higdon’s orchestral work, blue cathedral, which the WVSO will perform in January 2019, is one of the most performed contemporary orchestral compositions by a living American.

New York City’s "The Glass" once described her as “More than just a drummer—an alchemist of time, sound, and space, crafting visceral landscapes that penetrate the earsand mind.” Pegher will perform Richard Danielpour’s “The Wounded Healer” Percussion Concerto, which he wrote especially for her, with the WVSO in November.

Lee Greenwood is an award-winning country music icon known for the most recognizable patriotic song in America, God Bless the USA. This Academy of Country Music Male Vocalist of the Year's CD "American Patriot", went platinum in just three months. Greenwood will perform with the WVSO at the newly remodeled Charleston Civic Center with special VIP seating and hospitality tables on the arena floor.
