These College Football Teams Bring Action and Excitement to the Mountain State
Football has finally returned to the Mountain State! No matter what team you’re affiliated with, everyone can agree that college football season is magical in Almost Heaven. Whether you’re arm-in-arm singing “Take Me Home Country Roads” at Milan Puskar Stadium or doing the Thunder-Clap with Marco at Joan C. Edwards Stadium, West Virginia college football tradition runs deep. Regardless of where you are, you are sure to find action-packed college football on any given Saturday! There are plenty of notable teams found across the state!
West Virginia Mountaineers
The West Virginia Mountaineers bring the action to Mountaineer Field in Morgantown! The team competes in the Big 12 Conference and since 1891, WVU has racked up an impressive 15 conference titles and fifteen Bowl wins! From the tip of the Northern Panhandle to the bottom of the New River/Greenbrier Valley, Mountaineer pride is displayed loud and proud. One of the best traditions in the entire state is found in Morgantown after every Mountaineer victory when the crowd collectively sings John Denver’s “Take Me Home Country Roads” in celebration!
Marshall Thundering Herd
In 1970, the Marshall Thundering Herd suffered one of the biggest tragedies in sports history when the plane carrying their football team, coaches and boosters crashed just outside of Huntington, killing all 75 passengers. The school and community were devastated, but they persevered to bring their football program back to glory. The 2006 movie “We Are Marshall” starring Matthew McConaughey documents the rebuilding process of the 1971 Young Thundering Herd. Today, Marshall plays at Joan C. Edwards Stadium in Huntington and still exhibits this hardworking spirit that helped to uplift the entire community. Since 1895, Marshall has amounted thirteen conference titles, eight division titles and two national championships!
Other Teams From Around the State
While Marshall University and West Virginia University are the only two Division I teams in the state, there are plenty of other college football teams across the state that offer action and excitement to fans! The Concord University Mountain Lions play at Callaghan Stadium in Athens and offer fans a unique stadium atmosphere in the mountains of southern West Virginia. The University of Charleston Golden Eagles play at Laidley Field – giving fans a perfect view of the historic West Virginia Capitol! Other college football teams include teams like Glenville State College, Shepherd University, and Fairmont State University!
If you listen closely on a Fall Saturday afternoon in West Virginia, you may be able to hear the faint cheers of “Let’s go Mountaineers” or “We are…Marshall!” Better yet, you should experience one of their games first-hand and see for yourself how magical football season in Almost Heaven can be!
