Explore the Rapids
The New River, one of the oldest in the world, has been a staple of whitewater rafting for more than 50 years. It is broken into two sections — the Upper, known for being beginner and family-friendly because of its Class I and II rapids, and the Lower — a more challenging ride with rapids of varying classes. The New River rafting season runs from early spring through fall, and each ride is unique depending on the season and water levels.
The Gauley River, also known as “The Beast of the East” is an entirely separate experience. During Gauley Season (September/October) Summersville Lake is drained through scheduled dam releases, which unleashes 22 days of wild whitewater. While the Lower Gauley has its own set of thrills, the Upper Gauley claims the “Big 5”; five extreme Class V rapids that are typically on the top of the bucket list for anyone looking for a pulse-pounding adventure.
