Mild Whitewater

Whitewater rafting in Almost Heaven isn’t only for adrenaline junkies. The Mountain State offers plenty of options if you’re looking for a milder experience.

Mild Whitewater in West Virginia

While the lower New River is known for its intensity, the upper New River is much more family-friendly. In fact, children as young as six years old can enjoy a day on the upper New River. Adventures on the GorgeACE Adventure ResortRiver Expeditions and many more local outfitters offer packages on the upper New River at affordable prices the whole family will love. In Mountaineer Country, Tygart River Outfitters offers guests the chance to experience Class II and Class III whitewater on the BuckhannonTygart, and Middle Shenandoah rivers. River Riders in Harpers Ferry offers packages that include Class I-III rapids for the less experienced rafters, and whitewater tubing is even offered in the fall months thanks to lower water levels!

If you’re looking an adventure for the whole family, kiddos included, head to Audra State Park and visit Tygart River Outfitters. Most of the rivers that they run are Class I and II whitewater which is perfect for families with children looking to get outside and enjoy West Virginia’s great outdoors. When you’re finished rafting, tour the park and make your way to the nearby city of Elkins for dinner. Make sure to explore this historic city and stop by places like Henry G’s Café and El Gran Sabor.

The Eastern Panhandle is a great place for a milder rafting experience as well. Make your way to River Riders Family Adventure Resort to begin your expedition on the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers. If you want to try something other than rafting, River Riders also offers kayaking and tubing. Spend the day on the river relaxing or exploring, and when you’re finished, be sure to explore the rich history found at nearby Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. Hike the scenic trails, visit the site of John Brown’s Raid, and try local favorites like the Potomac Grille and White Horse Tavern.
