Wheeling Symphony’s “Respigh’s Pines”

André Raphel, conductor Deborah Selig, soprano The Wheeling Symphony’s 88th Season finale opens with Dvorak’s rousing Carnival Overture followed by Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4, an engaging and powerful work from arguably his most beautiful period. Soprano Deborah Selig will join the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra by performing Five Songs with Orchestra. Ms. Selig has been hailed by the Boston Globe, “an impressively nimble, lustrous soprano.” The season concludes with Respighi’s majestic and expressive Pines of Rome, painting a musical portrait of scenes around The Eternal City. A powerful and magical ending to an impressive musical journey, where it is clear that “Music is the Key.”

Casting Crowns

Having served as a full-time youth pastor for over 25 years, Casting Crowns’ front man, Mark Hall, continues to draw inspiration from the well of real life. “Because we have the honor of walking with people in our churches, we get to see what people are going through – the issues that are impacting everyone now,” shares Hall. “It’s in these situations that ideas are born for what we all need to hear right here and right now.” The local church has been the base for Casting Crowns’ music since their label debut release in 2003. With more than 10 million records sold and the title of Billboard’s top-selling act in Christian music since 2007, it’s still where the music is created. Hall and his bandmates – Juan and Melodee DeVevo, Megan Garrett, Brian Scoggin, Josh Mix and Chris Huffman – continue to work in ministry in their respective churches. The local church is the heartbeat of the band and the songs are an outpouring of that. The Very Next Thing, Casting Crowns’ latest offering, is a collection of intimate songs as well as upbeat, fresh sounding tracks with impactful lyrics centered around identifying and acting on what’s right next to you. “I think we all believe the gospel,” says Mark Hall, “we all want it, we’re just not sure what we’re supposed to do next. We’ve got this idea of an awesome walk with Jesus out there somewhere, and we’re looking for the bridge to get over to it. Serving God isn’t this giant dream a year from now. It’s not this thing He’s going to have you do in a month. It’s right now. Following God is the next word of love that I need to speak to somebody, the very next heart that needs to be encouraged. Ministry isn’t on Sunday; it’s not on a stage. It’s you, where you are, doing the next thing God tells you to do.” Along with this over-arching message, there’s also a deeply personal element to the record. Hall wrote the poignant and powerful “Oh My Soul” after being diagnosed with cancer in 2015. His first worry was about his family and he turned to the scripture in Psalms – Why so downcast oh my soul, put your hope in God. “I remember this scripture from David – it was just repeating in my head over and over,” Hall says. “The song “Oh My Soul” is really an argument with myself. I’m speaking truth to myself. The roots of my faith are talking to the storm in my life. For me, one of the most special moments in the song is the bridge because you hear the argument happening. I really wanted to paint the picture of that inner struggle that we’re all dealing with. We know what the verses say and we know how the storm feels. It’s hard to bring those together. But one thing about digging deep in the word is that when your roots are deep, they can’t be ignored. Even when the storm comes, and as shaken as I was, it felt like the storm kept just slamming up against something solid inside of me that wouldn’t let it control me. It was the roots of my faith. It was the truth that I had been soaking in and pouring into others for so many years. I got to speak scripture to myself.” Casting Crowns has produced some of the most compelling songs of his generation. Songs like “Voice of Truth,” “East to West,” “Lifesong,” “Until the Whole World Hears,” “Courageous” and “Thrive.” On The Very Next Thing, the band continues to encourage and inspire believers with songs that help strengthen their relationship with God. “You can follow God from right where you are,” Hall says of the new album’s central theme. “In the condition you are in right now, you can follow Him and He will make you His.”

Irish Road Bowling – Wheeling Hibernians Ohio Valley Championship

Irish Road Bowling consists of a ball made of iron and steel that is heavy enough to pick up speed, yet small enough for any person to handle. Besides the basic rules and terms, all you do is hurl this 28 oz. sized "bowl" with an underhand motion over a 1 to 2 mile country road and see how far it goes! Scored like golf, the fewest number of shots from the start to the finish line wins. Irish Road Bowling is similar to fast pitch softball, except with a running start. It's also like bowling if you had enough room to run 10 or 15 yards. Irish Road Bowling is ideal for young athletes or seniors who are looking to enjoy a scenic walk on a country road, combined with an ancient and exciting, but not overly strenuous, sport! They’d even go so far as to call themselves “misfits,” but with their fourth major label album, FINGERPRINTS (The Valory Music Co.), they’re finally embracing what makes them different once and for all. Although their sound has evolved over time, what they’re good at has always been the same – organic, live-show focused Country dripping with authenticity and perfected in clubs, amphitheaters and stadiums from coast to coast.

“I Will Remember” B.E. Taylor Christmas

This December there will be a special concert celebration entitled, “I Will Remember, B.E. Taylor Christmas. This concert will honor the man “B.E. Taylor” who brought us a gift so special, a holiday tradition that fans from all over came to each and every year the “B.E. Taylor Christmas Concert.” B.E. sadly passed away last August from a brain tumor that he lived with for almost 10 years. You’d never know he was sick and throughout this 10-year period he continued to perform and live his life. A loving husband, father, friend, and exceptional talent had left us. For so many there was such a chill in the air during the silent nights of last December — an emptiness that could not fill the hearts of all those who came to love and attend the B.E. Taylor Christmas Concert each year. They sent messages of sadness, loss and that Christmas just didn’t seem the same without this show. Not having the show last year was a void for so many. This only signifies the magnitude of his talent, his character, and the magnificent show and music he created. B.E. Taylor’s Christmas music is in the category of Nat King Cole, Andy Williams, Bing Crosby, etc., generations have grown up on his unique arrangements of our favorite Christmas classics and his Christmas music will be listened to in homes during the holidays for years to come. He will be forever – “The Voice of Christmas.”

Ancient Earthworks in the Middle Ohio Valley: Discovering New Sites and Re-examining the Old By Jarrod Burks, PhD, Director of Archaeological Geophysics, Ohio Valley Archaeology, Inc. The Middle Ohio Valley is rich in ancient moments--circles, squares, and even more exotic shapes; most were built about 1800 years ago. Though many sites were mapped in the 19th century and still more mounds were excavated, these may be the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Recent aerial photograph analysis and on-the-ground geophysical surveys have found a surprising number of previously undocumented enclosure sites, as well as many new features at well-known sites. Join us as we explore these new discoveries and see first-hand some of the exciting new scientific data that is leading scholars into a new era of earthwork research in our region.
