Start your hunting adventure nestled between the Continental Divide and the shadows of Seneca Rocks in beautiful Randolph County. Of course, any experienced hunter never reveals their favorite spot, but you can find one for yourself at Kumbrabow State Forest. Located on top of Rich Mountain along the western edge of the Allegheny Highlands, the rigid terrain welcomes hunters and archers seeking a challenge in the state’s highest forest. Deer, bear, turkey, bobcat and ruffed grouse can be found here. Spend the night in pioneer cabins located at Kumbrabow or take a short road trip down peaceful country roads to The Brazenhead Inn in nearby Mingo. Enjoy a hearty, home-cooked dinner at their full-service dining room and relax before another day in the woods.
Hit the road early in the morning and stop in The Last Run Restaurant in Cass for hot coffee and a hearty breakfast made from scratch. Continue making your way to Seneca State Forest, the perfect place for connecting with nature. The 11,000 acres of secluded woodlands and the oldest of West Virginia’s state forests, Seneca borders the beautiful Greenbrier River in Pocahontas County. Deer, bear, turkey and small game are popular quarry for hunters. Spend the night in the iconic Thorny Mountain Fire Tower located in the forest. The 65-foot tower provides 360-degree views of the landscape and unobstructed views of the night sky.
Drive deeper into the mountains of Pocahontas County and discover Watoga State Park, West Virginia’s largest state park. With 10,100 acres of land, Watoga is filled with plenty of outdoor recreational activities. Both modern and charming rustic cabins are available at Watoga State Park. The neighboring Calvin Price State Forest has more than 9,000 acres of rugged forests, —the ideal habitat for game like deer, bear, turkeys, grouse, and squirrels. Nearly two-thirds of the forest is accessible only by foot, perfect for connecting with nature. Close by the vast Monongahela National Forest has numerous hunting opportunities. Typical big and small game include deer, bear, turkey, grouse, and woodcock.
