Irish Road Bowling – Strawberry Festival

Irish Road Bowling consists of a ball made of iron and steel that is heavy enough to pick up speed, yet small enough for any person to handle. Besides the basic rules and terms, all you do is hurl this 28 oz. sized "bowl" with an underhand motion over a 1 to 2 mile country road and see how far it goes! Scored like golf, the fewest number of shots from the start to the finish line wins. Irish Road Bowling is similar to fast pitch softball, except with a running start. It's also like bowling if you had enough room to run 10 or 15 yards. Irish Road Bowling is ideal for young athletes or seniors who are looking to enjoy a scenic walk on a country road, combined with an ancient and exciting, but not overly strenuous, sport! The West Virginia State Gospel Singing Convention strives to preserve the old-time camp meeting and singing traditions with the annual sings held in June, July, and September. The facility is in the farm section of Nicholas County with approximately 30 acres of beautifully kept grounds. It is a place where families can plan for a weekend of camping with good old fashioned fun or just come for a day and enjoy some of the best of Gospel singers from WV and several surrounding states. Mountain Color Arts Show

Started in 1985, the Mountain Color Arts Show has grown to showcase local talent, as well as talent from the surrounding counties and states. This is a FREE event to all spectators. Richwood’s 33rd Scenic Mountain Triathlon

July 8, 2018 will bring the 33rd Anniversary of Richwood's Scenic Mountain Triathlon! Come join in a weekend of fun and excitement as we play host to West Virginia's oldest triathlon. Started in 1985, this event has become a favorite of triathletes and spectators alike. The entire race is held in the Monongahela National Forest (under special use permit). The race starts with a 1/2 mile swim in chilly Summit Lake, followed by a 17.1 mile bike ride over 3 Kennison Mountain (elevation of 3,988 feet) to the Cranberry Mountain Nature Center. The race concludes with a 6.2 mile run down to the Cranberry Glades and back to the Cranberry Mountain Nature Center to the finish line. Other activities include a Saturday packet pick-up and social from 3 p.m. - 7p.m. at the Chamber Office in Richwood and a post-race cookout at the finish line at the Nature Center on Sunday. Awards are given for numerous age groups, sexes and teams. Each athlete receives a free t-shirt and eats for free at the cookout. (Spectators are encouraged to eat for a small donation.) This is a spectator-friendly race with lots of food and fun for everyone.

Richwood’s Feast of the Ramson Festival

The “granddaddy of all Appalachian ramp feeds,” Richwood’s “Feast of the Ramson,” will be held Saturday, April 21. The 2018 version is the 80th anniversary of the very first public ramp feed held in this, the “ramp capital of the world.” In addition to a traditional menu of ham, bacon, potatoes, brown beans, and cornbread, the pleasing aroma of sassafras tea will challenge the somewhat pungent, distinctive odor of the delicious piece de resistance of this meal. Ramps, a wild mountain herb known for “smelling bad,” grows abundantly in the woody areas surrounding Richwood. The odor remains on the breath of the partaker for many hours after indulging. To ramp lovers, this smell is equal to the finest perfume. In addition to the meal which will be served from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cherry River Elementary School, a huge Arts and Crafts Show will begin at 10 a.m. and run through 4:00 p.m. in the heart of Richwood at the Richwood Fire Station, City Hall and Richwood Public Library. Special free entertainment will be performed in both locations throughout the day. Tickets for the express service line may be purchased in advance prior to April 20 through the Richwood Area Chamber of Commerce, 38 Edgewood Avenue, Richwood, WV 26261. Include appropriate payment and a self-addressed stamped envelope. Cost is $13.00 for adults and $6.00 for children. At the door cost is $15.00 and $7.00. The event promises to be a family-friendly feast for the eyes and ears, while supporting the Buckhannon community. Music, entertainment, children’s activities, and demonstrations are featured each Friday. Locally grown and produced agricultural products, beautiful and functional handmade items, and other products will be for sale. Local artisans, musicians, dancers and other entertainers will be featured. This is a community-created and sponsored event.

The Museum's building is one of the oldest historic landmarks in Upshur County. During the Civil War, the structure was commandeered for use by the Federal government (as were most churches in this area) as a food commissary. Betty Hornbeck, in her book Upshur Brothers of the Blue and Gray, writes that on August 30, 1862, following a battle of "Watertank Hill" in a Confederate victory known as "Jenkins Raid", twenty to thirty captured Federal prisoners were marched first to the courthouse and.... "after the arms had been destroyed, the prisoners were taken to the Southern Methodist Church on West Main Street that was being used as a commissary. The church contained thousands of bushels of oats and corn, all of which were taken into the street and burned by the prisoners under order of Commander Jenkins. Green coffee beans were shoe deep in the street." The oil painting inside the Museum, over the front entrance depicts the looting and pillaging of the frightening night so long ago. Mountain Quilt Quest – “Birds of a Feather, Quilt Together

West Virginia's Mountain Quilt Quest's theme for 2017 will be Birds of a Feather, Quilt Together. Visit WV Mountain Quilt Quest for more details. Come and join us for a winding adventure through the nature-filled hills of West Virginia. This 2 week event filled with fabric, fun and prizes will indulge your love of quilting while you enjoy the natural beauty of our State. Each of the 11 quilt shops will provide a complimentary block pattern; as well as offer the option of purchasing their project kit. When you have collected all quilt block patterns from each of the 11 shops you will be able to create a wonderful quilt as a memory of your journey. Each shop will have a door prize drawing so be sure to register at each one as you visit. This year's theme fabric 'Birds of a Feather, Quilt Together' is specially designed by West Virginia artist Dorothy Post Swick from Bridgeport. Our block patterns are created by West Virginia Eileen Farren from Kenova.

WV Day Celebration

Honor West Virginia's Birthday on June 20, 2017 at the WV Wildlife Center! This year’s celebration will be “For the Birds”. The West Virginia Raptor Rehabilitation Center will be conducting an environmental education program at the Amphitheater. We’ll have educational activities and crafts for the kids designed to teach them how to protect the habitats for all birds. We’ll be serving birthday cake so come celebrate the birth of our state.

Every Friday from June through September, people from all over the state can come to enjoy music, entertainment, demonstrations, food, West Virginia-grown produce, and handmade products. Children's activities will range from face painting to learning to juggle. Some of the items for sale will include local, organic produce, food, jewelry, textiles and hand-carved wood products.

Summersville Lake Lighthouse Festival & Car Show

Join us for the 5th Annual Summersville Lake Lighthouse Festival on Saturday, August 25th, from 10am to 6pm on the Lighthouse grounds. Cabela's is the Official Sponsor of the Event and will be on hand all afternoon teaching archery this year. Tamarack Artisans and Crafters from throughout the state will be showcasing their skills along with live Appalachian music, great food, entertainment, raffles and a Classic Car Show. Live entertainment at the Gazebo includes EmmaLea Deal 11am to 2pm, who is headlining for “Rudy Elvis” performing from 3pm to 5pm. The Humane Society and the Nicholas County Animal Shelter will have kittens and puppies available for adoption. All Lighthouse Tours will be $5 per person on the day of the Festival. New this Year will be Gotcha! Archery Games which features Archery Tag, $5 per player per game or $15 for unlimited. Don't forget to stop at the booth to sign a card for a soldier from WV Ambassadors for Adopt A US Soldier and sign up for a membership with the Air Evac Life Team who will have their 16' Air Evac Helicopter on display. Face Painting, Balloon Animals and Henna Tattoos by Paint MisBehavin' is new this year along with Woodbine Jams & Jellies and LuLaRoe. Back again by popular demand is the Almost Heaven Sunset Slush, Dickies BBQ and the Rolling Stove. The Cruise In that was held during the 2015 festival drew over 55 Classic Hot Rods and Vintage Automobiles from every era. Farthest driven was Kenny Smith's pristine 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle SS from Akron, Ohio. Crowd favorite was Bill Bibb's 1953 Rolls Royce Silver Dawn from Oak Hill, West Virginia. 2016 was our 1st Car Show which was a success. The Best of Show was Chris Kappler's 1937 Packard from Oak Hill and the Best Classic was Oak Hill's Bill Bibb with his 1929 Lincoln Continental. This year we are again listed on the National Street Rod Associations Calendar of Events for West Virginia. Last year we had over 130 classics and hot rods. As there are only 130 spaces available for 2018 Summersville Lake Lighthouse Festival & Car Show. Those of you planning to show your ride should not delay in contacting our office to register for this year and "Save the Date! August 25th". Summersville Lake Retreat Representatives will be picking the "Best of Show" and a Celebrity from WSAZ TV 3 will be picking the winner of the "Best Classic", Cabela's will be picking the "Best Truck" and United Bank has sponsored the "People's Choice" Trophy. We will also be having a "Kid's Choice" Trophy sponsored by Summit Racing Equipment for the first 50 kids to pick their favorite vehicle.
