Enjoy a WV Snow Day Indoors or Outdoors

Channel your inner child on an Almost Heaven snow day this winter. Spend the day outside in the chilly elements, stay warm by a roaring fire, or have the best of both worlds and do it all. Either way, you’re bound to have an unforgettable day.

Getting out in the fresh, crisp winter air is always exhilarating. Here are a few of the best activities to get you in the outdoors.

Snowtubing

If you want the thrill of skiing and snowboarding — but with little to no effort — plop down into a tube and fly through the powder. Bring back childhood memories of sledding without even having to walk back up the hill.

Canaan Valley Resort offers the longest ride in the mid-Atlantic, with 1,200 feet of pure joy. While Winterplace boasts the biggest snowtubing area in West Virginia with 16 lanes and 2 super carpets lifts. Spend your snow day feeling just like a kid again.

Ice Skating

As freezing temperatures dominate the air, West Virginia becomes speckled with magical ice-skating rinks. Lace up some skates and enjoy this age-old wintertime tradition.

Cross-Country Skiing

Explore vast landscapes, rolling hillsides, dense forests all while getting quite a workout. West Virginia has multiple cross-country ski outfitters. Each in a beautiful, Almost Heaven setting.

  • Tucked in the Appalachian Mountains, Alpine Lake Resort offers hundreds of snow-covered acres to ski on.
  • Canaan Valley Resort, located within the Monongahela National Forest has almost 20 miles of marked, ungroomed trails and acres of wide-open meadows.
  • Near Canaan Valley, White Grass Ski Touring Center provides access to some of West Virginia’s most-treasured high country.
  • Elk River Touring Center is positioned in the backcountry around the Highland Scenic Highway and is ideal for winter exploration.

If a break from work is a luxury for you, enjoy the day indoors. Get cozy and take in the winter wonderland from the comfort of your warm home.

Bake your favorite treats

Cookies, and brownies and pies—oh my. Snow days are the perfect time to indulge in delicious comfort foods. Whether you want to try out a new recipe or whip up one of your go-to desserts, wintry days are a great excuse to do so.

Get crafty

Keep your hands occupied while you relax on the sofa. Knit or paint if those are hobbies of yours. Or try something you’ve never done before, like making a wreath. Evergreens can be easily found around your yard and will fill any space with a delightfully fresh scent.

Have a do-nothing day

Kick your feet up, flip on a movie or a new tv series and park it on the couch all day. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with just doing nothing as you watch the snow pile outside your window. Be sure to have some West Virginia goodies on hand, like Holl’s chocolates, a selection of wine from Lambert’s Winery and Forks of Cheat Winery and of course pepperoni rolls from Chico Bakery and Country Club Bakery.

How will you be spending your day?
