Weston

Weston is an ideal family getaway. Conveniently located at the intersection of two major highways, you’ll be within minutes of everything the area has to offer. Catch paranormal encounters with a visit to an old asylum. Stay at an award-winning resort. Dine in a charming bistro or dig in at an old-time diner. This area, known as Stonewall Country, also offers the best in fishing, golfing, boating and other outdoor activities.

Dining

Dave’s Famous T&L Hotdogs takes you back to the 50s with a recreated diner serving West Virginia’s #1 selling hot dogs. Enjoy tasty hot dogs, fresh cut fries and tunes from an old jukebox. For Appalachian soul food, check out Giovanni’s, a local institution that’s been around for generations. Weston’s “original mom & pop shop” serves up Italian classics with an Appalachian twist. Thyme Bistro is a high-end bistro with a menu featuring roasted vegetable stuffed quesadillas and grilled salmon salads.

Entertainment

Stop by one of West Virginia’s most popular wineries, Lambert’s Vintage Wines. The winery is constructed from hand cut stones gathered from various parts of the state. With a variety of whites, reds and blushes, there’s wine for everyone’s taste. Spend an afternoon touring the vineyard and sampling sweet whites and dry reds. If you’re a foodie fanatic, this area hosts the only Kansas City BBQ Society sanctioned barbeque competition in the state. The Almost Heaven BBQ Bash brings in the best cooks from across the country to compete with their mouthwatering recipes.

Shopping

Chances are if you’re in this area, you might be taking a fishing or hunting trip. Get everything you need at McFly Outdoors, the largest selection of hunting and fishing equipment in the area. For handcrafted vases, stemware and other glass items, visit Appalachian Glass. This family-run business is keeping the tradition of handmade glass alive. Stop by and take a piece of West Virginia home with you.

Recreation

This area is known for some of the best musky fishing in the state. Visit Stonecoal Lake and enjoy casting a line. On top of their wide selection of hunting and fishing gear, McFly Outdoors offers an indoor firearm and archery range as well. Nearby Stonewall Resort State Park features a championship golf course designed by Arnold Palmer, 13 miles of hiking and biking trails and a 2,600-acre lake for boating, swimming and stand up paddle boarding.

History

Lewis County is a history buff’s paradise. Visit the world’s second largest hand-cut stone masonry building. The Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum served as a sanctuary for the mentally ill beginning in the mid-1800’s. This asylum, which earned recognition from The Travel, holds fascinating stories of Civil War raids, a gold robbery, the “curative” effects of architecture and the efforts of determined individuals to help better the lives of the mentally ill. The Mountaineer Military Museum started as a promise to never forget a few fallen friends but has grown into a gallery of over 35 years’ worth of military memorabilia. Stop by today to see items from the Korean, Vietnam and Civil wars.

Stay

The Stonewall Resort offers luxury accommodations in a main lodge, cabins and cottages. If you’d rather be closer to nature, they offer campsites too. Here you’ll be close to nature but far from ordinary. There are even a few pet friendly options if you can’t leave home without your furry, four-legged friends. Featuring three restaurants – a signature restaurant at Stillwaters, picturesque Lightburn’s and the casual TJ Muskies Lounge – you’ll never have to venture outside the park.
