SAMMY KERSHAW In the course of breaking into the ranks of stardom in country music, Sammy Kershaw has made contributions to more than just the charts. His platinum albums were propelled into the records books by hits such as “She Don’t Know She’s Beautiful,” “I Can’t Reach Her Anymore,” “National Working Woman’s Holiday,” “Love Of My Life,” “Cadillac Style,” “Don’t Go Near The Water,” “Haunted Heart,”…and many other milestones. AARON TIPPIN Tippin has crusaded for the working man and woman since he ripped country music wide open with his uncompromising single “You’ve Got To Stand For Something.” His voice continued to ring loud and clear with such hits as “I Wouldn’t Have It Any Other Way”, “There Ain’t Nothin’ Wrong With The Radio”, That’s As Close As I’ll Get To Loving You,” “My Blue Angel” and “Kiss This”. Five of his albums are certified “Gold” and a sixth CD—Read Between The Lines—stands at the “Platinum” level. Tippin’s honest lyrics and direct, impassioned vocals have built a large and devoted audience. COLLIN RAYE Collin Raye is nothing if not passionate. His soulful delivery has set country standards in such searing ballads as “Love, Me,” “In This Life,” “Not That Different” and “If I were you”. Always an energizing showman, he has also blazed through such vivid rockers as “My Kind of Girl,” “That’s My Story,” “I Can Still Feel You” and “I Want You Bad.” With 24 top ten records, 16 #1 hits, and having been a 10 time male vocalist of the year nominee (5 CMA and 5 ACM), this truly electrifying performer of his era remains one of the great voices of our time.

Richwood’s Feast of the Ramson Festival

The “granddaddy of all Appalachian ramp feeds,” Richwood’s “Feast of the Ramson,” will be held Saturday, April 21. The 2018 version is the 80th anniversary of the very first public ramp feed held in this, the “ramp capital of the world.” In addition to a traditional menu of ham, bacon, potatoes, brown beans, and cornbread, the pleasing aroma of sassafras tea will challenge the somewhat pungent, distinctive odor of the delicious piece de resistance of this meal. Ramps, a wild mountain herb known for “smelling bad,” grows abundantly in the woody areas surrounding Richwood. The odor remains on the breath of the partaker for many hours after indulging. To ramp lovers, this smell is equal to the finest perfume. In addition to the meal which will be served from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cherry River Elementary School, a huge Arts and Crafts Show will begin at 10 a.m. and run through 4:00 p.m. in the heart of Richwood at the Richwood Fire Station, City Hall and Richwood Public Library. Special free entertainment will be performed in both locations throughout the day. Tickets for the express service line may be purchased in advance prior to April 20 through the Richwood Area Chamber of Commerce, 38 Edgewood Avenue, Richwood, WV 26261. Include appropriate payment and a self-addressed stamped envelope. Cost is $13.00 for adults and $6.00 for children. At the door cost is $15.00 and $7.00. For more information, visit www.richwoodchamberofcommerce.org, or phone 304-846-6790.

The West Virginia Hitchers

The original “Hitchers” was very guitar-centric with pedal steel and percussion layered on top. The new “WV Hitchers” is a more authentic Folk-Americana sound, relying on the powerful songwriting and smooth vocals of Maria that melds with the strength of the lead guitar position, now occupied by Chuck on his pedal steel. Dan and Creed fill out the mix with Dan’s subtle and steady percussion as well as Creed’s tastefully rich bass lines. Tickets $5, kids 6 and under get in free.

The Boatmen are from the heart of West Virginia. With diverse instrumentation and the right blend of soaring harmony over top of Americana anthems, they have created a niche all their own. Into their third year and second album, the group has continually expanded its horizons through a non-stop tour schedule and constant support from their close knit fanbase. Come out to see this group which is easily viewed as bluegrass, rock-grass or a new-grass outfit; The Boatmen fall better into Americana Soulgrass. We will also have the local food vendor Street Meatz out selling dinner options! Come out and enjoy summer! Tickets will be $5, children 6 and under get in free.

Beats on the Basin: Deer Creek Boys

These Virginia natives are definitely a local favorite. Their energetic picking and hard hitting harmonies have earned them a respectable place in Bluegrass music and the festival scene, and we’re stoked to bring them back to the Mountain for your listening pleasure.

Beats on the Basin: The Spanglers

This not-so-typical family band hails from Lewisburg, WV, in our neighboring Greenbrier County. Their sound is an innovative blend of Americana Roots music and interesting experimentation that’s sure to get your foot tapping and hips swaying.

Beats on the Basin: The Get Right Band

The Get Right Band has been called “hip-shaking, earth-quaking pure funk fun,” while others have said they have “tight and diverse jams and a distinctive intellectual but accessible world view.” The band is widely recognized as an up-and-coming progressive musical force to be reckoned with and we’re pretty stoked to see what they’re all about.

Beats on the Basin: Pimps of Joytime

Three bands for FREE in one night? Yep. Not sure what’s gotten into us, but I am sure you’ll thank us for it later. From a blue-grass tinged joyride straight out of the 80s, to filthy harmonica solos rooted in Appalachia, to the funky “groove machine” that is Pimps of Joytime, there’s bound to be something to get you up and moving!

Beats on the Basin: The Gin Blossoms

Ever wanted to go to sleep and wake up back in 1995? Yeah, we have too, and we figured what better way to do that than by hosting the one and only 1990s favorite pop rock sensations, the Gin Blossoms. Go ahead and crimp your hair and break out the JNCO jeans. This is sure to be an epic blast from the past.

Beats on the Basin: The Jakob’s Ferry Stragglers

The Jakob’s Ferry Stragglers draw freely from old-time, bluegrass, country, jazz, rockabilly and swing styles to create their tight, high-energy string band music. Well-crafted original songs with emotional depth, masterful picking, and resonant vocal harmonies combine to forge new territories and a fresh take on Appalachian Americana music.

Beats on the Basin: JJ Lawhorn

J.J. Lawhorn is a singer songwriter whose Country music ambitions have taken him from Virginia to Nashville. His unquestionable southern boy swagger along with his adept ability to express himself through song constructs a live music experience that’s perfect for our little Island in the sky.

Beats on the Basin: The Floorboards

The Floorboards are an Appalachian roots rock ensemble hailing from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Known for marrying rock and roll and country roots with the sights and sounds of Southern Mountain towns, the Floorboards have quickly become a staple in the roots music scene and are branching out with purpose.
