There’s tubing, and then there’s tubing.

Inner tubes are great for lazy float trips, but did you know you can also ride them through bouncy Class II and III rapids?

Check out these whitewater tubing trips on West Virginia’s wild, wonderful rivers. Better yet, pair your tubing trip with more adventures and make a long weekend of it!

Explore the rivers traversed by George Washington and Thomas Jefferson and soak up the history and scenery of the area! In historic Harpers Ferry where the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers meet, you can ride Class I-III rapids on the Potomac or choose flatwater on the Shenandoah.

River Riders supplies rentals for guided or self-guided whitewater tubing trips for ages 10 and up (must be at least 5 feet tall.)

2. Greenbrier River

The Greenbrier River winds through quiet, rolling hills in southern West Virginia. Rapids are mostly Class I and II, with 1 Class III rapid on the Renick to Anthony section.

Greenbrier River Campground has rentals and shuttle service for self-guided whitewater tubing trips on different sections of the river. These trips are recommended for riders ages 7 and up who are at least 50 pounds and 4 feet tall.

3. Tygart, Middle Fork and Buckhannon rivers

The Tygart River is a gem to whitewater fans in north central West Virginia, flowing from the Pocahontas-Randolph County line to the West Fork River near Fairmont. Tygart River Outfitters provides shuttle service and gear for self-guided Class II-III adventure tubing trips on the Tygart as well as the Middle Fork and Buckhannon rivers. Whitewater trips are for ages 12 and older.
