Add these thrilling adventures to your agenda while you’re exploring this recreational hotspot of Almost Heaven.
Hiking the Hills
You will be pleasantly surprised by the stunning vistas to be found near the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. Long Point Trail appeals to both beginner and experienced hikers for its easy, yet rewarding hike. This 1.6-mile (one way) trail traverses field and forest, leading you to a rock outcrop that boasts a stunning view of the New River Gorge Bridge. The nearby 2.4-mile Endless Wall Trail and 1.6-mile Grandview Rim Trail also boast beautiful views of the New River Gorge.
Whitewater Rafting
Almost Heaven is home to the highest density of whitewater runs in the United States. Take on the varying intensities of rapids on the New River – ranging from Class I to Class V. Thanks to local outfitters like ACE Adventure Resort and Adventures on the Gorge, you don’t have to be an expert to enjoy rafting here. Try a rafting trip on the Lower New River, or chill out on the Upper New for a relaxing, slower-paced float. For a wave of even more thrills, travel down the narrow 25 miles of canyon line facing the 100 rapids on the Gauley River. After a few minutes on the water, you’ll understand why the Upper Gauley is called the “Beast of the East.”
Bridge Walk
Bridge Walk is the gateway to a catwalk of a lifetime. Travel among the structural beams of the New River Gorge Bridge at 851 feet above the New River. The unique belay system keeps you harnessed at all times while your guide educates you on the history of the New River Gorge and the bridge’s structural features. Bridge Walk is open year-round, and a shuttle bus takes you to the entry point from the shuttle location in Lansing. This experience boasts some of the most scenic views of West Virginia.
Rock Climbing
The New River Gorge National Park and Preserve is known for having some of the most thrilling rock climbing routes on the East Coast. Whether you are interested in speed climbing, bouldering, repelling or new to the sport as a whole, group experts at outfitters, including Adventures on the Gorge and ACE Adventure Resort, are there to help you take your climbing to new heights.
