Plays at Adaland

Adaland is most pleased to serve as the showcase for Philippi playwright Alma J. Bennett, who brings one of WV’s important historical figures, Laura Jackson Arnold, the sister of Confederate General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, to life in “Dearest Sister”, a one act play that is followed by “Act II.” The plays tell about Laura’s life and relationship with her famous brother. In 1844 when she was 18, Laura married Jonathan Arnold and moved to Beverly. Following the Battle of Rich Mountain in 1861, Federal troops occupied Beverly, a VA town that had strong Confederate sympathies. In stark contrast, Laura Jackson Arnold was an outspoken Unionist, even nursing wounded Union soldiers in her Beverly home. Laura’s Union support created fissures in the once close relationship between Laura and her brilliant Confederate military leader brother. Dessert followed by a live show on pavilion. Adults $15.00.

The Harlem Globetrotters

The Harlem Globetrotters will bring their 2017 World Tour to the WVU Coliseum Wednesday, April 5. Tickets for the 7 p.m. game will go on sale Monday, Dec. 19, at the Mountainlair and CAC box offices and online at Ticketmaster.com. The Harlem Globetrotters are legendary worldwide, synonymous with one-of-a-kind family entertainment and great basketball skills for the past 90 years. Throughout their history, the Original Harlem Globetrotters have showcased their iconic talents in 122 countries and territories on six continents, often breaking down cultural and societal barriers while providing fans with their first-ever basketball experience. Proud inductees of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, the Globetrotters have entertained hundreds of millions of fans – among them popes, kings, queens and presidents – over nine thrilling decades. As the Harlem Globetrotters prepare for their appearance at the WVU Coliseum, the iconic team took a timeout for Guinness World Records Day. Only one year after setting seven official Guinness World Records titles, the Globetrotters broke a single-day total of nine records this year, including the longest basketball hook-shot. The records were broken at the AT&T Center, home of the San Antonio Spurs, during the 12th annual Guinness World Records Day, a global celebration of record breaking launched to celebrate the day the Guinness World Records book sold its 100 millionth copy. Since 2000, the Globetrotters now own 15 current Guinness World Records. “We are the original trick shot artists, so it is great to reclaim our records and re-establish our dominance,” said Harlem Globetrotters star Big Easy Lofton. “We have been training hard, so to have a day where we push the limits and try some fun yet challenging shots, is pretty cool. I mean, how many people can say they’re a Guinness World Records titleholder? We can’t wait to put smiles on people’s faces as we demonstrate our skills and talents on the upcoming world tour.” Among the nine Guinness World Records titles which were set by the Globetrotters, four of them reclaimed records that were originally held by the team and then broken by Dude Perfect. The Globetrotters reclaimed the records of longest basketball hook shot, longest basketball shot blindfolded, most basketball 3-pointers made by a pair in one minute, and longest blindfolded basketball hook shot. The list of records set by the Globetrotters are: Longest basketball hook shot – Big Easy Lofton (72 feet, 6.25 inches) Longest basketball shot blindfolded – Ant Atkinson (73 feet 10 inches) Most basketball 3-pointers in one minute (single ball) – Ant Atkinson and Cheese Chisholm (10 each) Farthest basketball shot made while sitting on the court – Thunder Law (58 feet, 9.25 inches) Most bounced basketball 3-pointers in one minute – Zeus McClurkin (5) Most basketball 3-pointers made by a pair in one minute – Ant Atkinson and Cheese Chisholm (22 each) Farthest basketball shot under-one-leg – Thunder Law (52 feet, 5.5 inches) Longest blindfolded basketball hook shot – Big Easy Lofton (58 feet, 2.5 inches) Most basketball slam dunks in one minute (individual) – Zeus McClurkin (16) The Globetrotters will tip off their 2017 World Tour Dec. 26 and will play in more than 250 North American markets as well as 30 countries worldwide. Tickets for April 5 at the WVU Coliseum start at $24 and will go on sale Monday, Dec. 19, at 10 a.m. Tickets may be purchased at the Mountainlair and Creative Arts Center box offices, Ticketmaster.com and by phone at 304-293-SHOW (7469) or 800-745-3000.

Egg-cellent Easter Extravaganza

Most people know the rhyme by Beatrix Potter: “Here comes Peter Cottontail, Hoppin’ down the bunny trail, Hippity, hoppity, hippity, hoppity, Easter’s on its way…” This year, we have decided that everyone one should have a chance to “hop down a bunny trail.” Join us for games and activities scattered around the park in a path that the bunny just might have taken once upon a time. Due to mixed reviews from our event last year, there will be no formal egg hunt, but it is not entirely out of the question that the bunny could have dropped some here or there. This event is not a race, but meant to be more of a walk with occasional challenges where participants could sometimes earn candy or a small toy. Feel free to bring a basket and a camera as we have it on good authority that the Bunny might make an appearance. Stop by any time during the event to participate. Being “on-time” is not required. https://www.facebook.com/events/267312993698361/

The novel, although classified as historical fiction, traces Wetzel's life over a period of more than twenty years, featuring events and the rich history that occurred in the upper Ohio River Valley, Kentucky, Ohio, and down the Mississippi to New Orleans. According to de Hass, a historian in the mid-nineteenth century, Wetzel's efforts were without parallel in border warfare.
