3 Must-Try Winter Adventures for the Whole Family in West Virginia

Winter in West Virginia is a time to make treasured memories with the ones you love. There is snow-covered bliss at every turn. This season, discover the joy to be found on even the coldest of days with these thrilling adventures in Almost Heaven.

Tubing

Nothing says pure-hearted fun like racing down a frosty hillside on an inner tube. Adults and children alike are in for endless laughs and gorgeous views as you explore the snow-tubing landscape that West Virginia has to offer.

Snowshoe Mountain‘s tubing park features eight lanes that will take you on a rip-roaring zoom down six stories. Winterplace Ski Resort houses the largest snow tubing park in the Mountain State. It offers 14 lanes of fun, snow tubing classes and two carpet lifts to save your energy for the slopes.

One of the most popular attractions in Canaan Valley Resort State Park is its 1,200-foot-long tube park. This multi-lane park is one of the longest in the Mid-Atlantic. Visitors can head up the “magic carpet” for sweeping panoramic views of Canaan Valley before hitting the tube runs.

Caving

Explore new depths beneath the snow-covered trees by visiting spectacular caves and caverns in the undergrounds of Almost Heaven.

Lost World Caverns in Greenbrier County descend 120 feet below the Earth’s surface for guided and self-guided tours with remarkable formations, including the Snowy Chandelier, a 30-ton compound stalactite. Smoke Hole Caverns offers guided tours with unique columns and draperies just 15 minutes up the road from the beautiful Seneca Rocks. Gemstone mining is also available for a playful treasure hunt with the whole family.

Ziplining

Winter ziplining is just the ticket for the perfect family adventure. You can soar through the snow-falling skies with an up-close view of West Virginia’s most mountainous regions.

Located in the heart of the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, Adventures on the Gorge offers its TreeTops course with zips between 180 to 640 feet in length. A walk across four sky bridges and a 35-foot rappel drop is just icing on the cake of this thrill-seeking escapade. Visitors to the national park looking for some zipline fun should also stop by ACE Adventure Resort. The New River Gorge course features nine zip lines and two sky bridges – all offering stunning national park views.

A new scenic zipline tour awaits you at River Riders in the Eastern Panhandle. Zips vary from 200 to 1,000 feet in length, traveling over the picturesque Potomac River. Suspension bridge crossings, a 25-foot free fall and belayed ladder climbs also contribute to an epic day of frosty fun.
