Get a taste of history with the drink of the Devil at Hatfield & McCoy Moonshine or indulge in innovation with Southern Blend Whiskey at Mountain State Distillery.
This grain-to-glass craft distillery is bringing spirits alive with West Virginia mountain water. The distillery is located in Greenbrier County and offers tours and tastings of their high-quality bourbon, gin and vodka. Walking tours are $10 a person and are available on Friday’s and Saturday’s. Try one of their delicious cocktails like The Handsome Devil, made with their very own Old Scout American Whiskey. After visiting Smooth Ambler, make your way over to the Greenbrier Resort and Spa to enjoy an evening of dinner and shopping located just 20 minutes down the road.
Black Draft Distillery
Located in Martinsburg, Black Draft Distillery is home to three different kinds of moonshine. Owners Glen and Tara Price made it their mission to create their alcohols using all-natural and local ingredients. With their grand reopening occurring April 23rd, there will be a new barn and expanded farm to explore. Visit the new facility and celebrate with their signature Straight Bourbon Whiskey or Rise and Shine Coffee Moonshine. Expand your trip by taking a short drive to Harper’s Ferry and spend the day taking in the beauty and history of the town.
Ripley is home to the Appalachian Distillery. Their moonshine made with local grains and bottled with certified arsenic free U.S. bottles comes in 11 different flavors for you to choose from. Visitors that are 21 and older of this distillery are offered free moonshine tasting. Tours are also available for purchase but, free to those who purchase merchandise. After your tasting, head on down to the Fairplain Yacht Club, one of West Virginia’s most unique dinning places.
Mountain State Distillery
The first distillery inside the City of Charleston, it produces small-batch whiskeys. Stop in for a free sample or purchase a bottle of their trademark Southern Blend Whiskey that’s made with a blend of corn, wheat and barley then charred in white oak barrels. This small, boutique style micro-distillery is conveniently located in the historic shopping district of downtown Charleston. After hanging out for a while, take a stroll down Capitol Street for some window shopping and delicious food.
Hatfield & McCoy Moonshine
the Hatfield & McCoy Moonshine Distillery in Gilbert. This drink of the devil 90-proof moonshine is handmade, bottled, and labeled on site from Devil Anse Hatfield’s own recipe. If you are interested in the moonshine making process, this distillery also offers behind-the-scenes tours. After getting a taste of history, end your day with a round of golf at Twisted Gun Golf Course or hitting the Hatfield and McCoy trails for a fun off-roading adventure.
