Tour the Historic Home of George Bird Evans

The Old Hemlock Foundation will open the historic home of George Bird Evans and his wife, Kay Evans, to public tours. The 1782 deeded property is on the National Register of Historic Places. The log home was built in circa 1815. The tours will tell about lives of George and Kay. This tale of love of mountains, art, music, fine writing and English Setters will share about George as an artist, author of mysteries and upland hunting, and breeding the Old Hemlock Line of English Setters. We have two public tours per year. All other visits are by appointment. There are approximately three miles of trails Old Hemlock. Visitors are welcome to use them just by dropping an email to lejay@oldhemlock.org so we know you are on the property.

Inaugural BB&T Malden Salt Fest

The Inaugural BB&T Malden Salt Fest will be held October 6th to 8th in Malden at J.Q. Dickinson Salt-Works. There will be music, food, tours, a parade, dancing, crafts, demonstrations, and more! October 6th: Dinner at J.Q. Dickinson Salt-Works for descendants of salt-works owners, workers, and slaves. Tickets will go on sale in September October 7th: The day kicks off at 10:00 a.m. with an old fashioned parade in downtown Malden which will end at J.Q. Dickinson Salt-Works. The day will be full of assorted cultural activities such as lectures, films, music and dancing. There will be re-enacting of the salt making of the original settlers, oral history taking and tours. A variety of local foods, craft beer, cider and treats will be available for purchase. Live music into the evening. Free admission. October 8th: A service will be held at the African Zion Church in downtown Malden with gospel singing. The Spring Hill Cemetery will be open for tours of the grounds where the salt maker's and their descendants are buried. Blenko Festival of Glass

A selection of classes are offered for all ages within the factory. During this event, visitors will have the rare opportunity to view our skilled artisans at work as well as be able to participate in a variety of classes related to the glass making process. From hot glass to crafts with wood, glass and glue for youngsters, special prices, tours, signing event and family activities. Family fun. Classes fill quickly. Taste of Charleston Inaugural Tour

Come experience the flavor and the fun that downtown Charleston has to offer. Each guided tour welcomes a small group of six to 16 people and includes at least five food stops. You'll cover roughly 1.5 miles at a comfortable pace in two-and-a-half hours. Along the way, enjoy an entertaining and informative look at the history and culture of West Virginia's capital city.

Stolen Pig Rally

Located in downtown Historic Matewan West Virginia, the Stolen Pig Rally will be held April 28, 2016 thru May 1, 2016 and will feature guided and self guided tours through the winding roads of Southern West Virginia including the "Feud Loop" for history buffs. There will be a BBQ dinner, live entertainment and a Stolen Pig Poker Run. The event is open to all sized dual sport adventure bikes as well as street bikes. SETI Tours

Our new SETI Tour celebrates Green Bank’s historic Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence with this 3-hour tour. Participants begin with an exclusive presentation right in the control room of our historic 85-1 Telescope where the search began with Frank Drake’s OZMA Project. From there, guests enjoy a rare tour inside the 140-foot telescope control room where Jill Tartar’s Project Phoenix began and then to normally-restricted GBT access points. The tour ends in our Drake Lounge where you will be greeted by NRAO Staff and learn about the future of SETI as GBT embarks on the new Breakthrough Listen project. If you’ve ever wanted to be inside our operation control rooms or to speak to one of our radio astronomers in person, then this is THE opportunity of a lifetime! Advance reservations and screening strictly required at least 40 hours in advance. 20 participants max, 4 min.; Ages 12 & up. Hard hats and light refreshments provided.

Bramwell Tour of Homes

Go back in time and visit the town of the Millionaires. This self-guided walking tour features rows of Victorian homes, all built during the height of the West Virginia coal industry. The homes date back to the late 1880s and early 1900s . Quaint brick streets line the way, with delightful stores and restaurants on Bramwell's Main Street. The event will take place at the Bramwell Presbyterian Church in Bramwell. Tickets will be sold one hour prior to the event. Interpreters will be at multiple homes to tell stories of the early days of the town.
