22nd Annual North River Mills / Ice Mountain Day 2017

Each year we celebrate the by-gone days of this 1700s village. Enjoy a relaxing day in this once-bustling, now quiet hamlet. Usual activities include (Double check closer to the event date): Old time music jam on the porch, Folks clogging/buck or flat foot dancing, Interpretive hay-less ride around the hamlet. Historical re-enactors will likely be camping and participating (French and Indian, Civil War, Native American) Rob Wolford demonstrates blacksmithing.  Model A and Model T Fords, Steam engines and antique tractors and The church ladies provide refreshments. The adjacent quiet dirt lane is a nice place for a hike. C.C. Hall has an excellent site with info about the village:www.NorthRiverMills.org North River Mills was designated a "Historical Landmark". If you have old photos ( people or structures of the village), we would love to scan them. Often old timers come to swap stories of North River Mills, giving the day a homecoming feel.  Ted Kalvitis, the antique tractor guru, and his better half, Stephanie host a Narrow Gallery (corn crib) art show. Docents lead hikes to the cold vents at Ice Mountain (probably early.)

West Virginia Food Truck Festival

A one-of-a-kind event with a select group of WV food trucks and some of WV's most entertaining musicians. Get ready to chow down, rock out, relax, and have fun.

Beats on the Basin: Qiet

Qiet is the culmination of this wild and wondrous world, infused with every culture on the planet and refined in the mountains of West Virginia.Their songs radiate an undeniable energy, passionate lyrics and humor dark as coal. A balance of high-energy chaos and perfect order, Qiet’s visceral performances will keep you dancing long after the concert is over. Combining the elegant excesses of 1920’s jazz with the unpredictably of pure punk rock, what results is not just a show -- it is an experience

Beats on the Basin: Deer Creek Boys

These Virginia natives are definitely a local favorite. Their energetic picking and hard hitting harmonies have earned them a respectable place in Bluegrass music and the festival scene, and we’re stoked to bring them back to the Mountain for your listening pleasure.

Beats on the Basin: The Get Right Band

The Get Right Band has been called “hip-shaking, earth-quaking pure funk fun,” while others have said they have “tight and diverse jams and a distinctive intellectual but accessible world view.” The band is widely recognized as an up-and-coming progressive musical force to be reckoned with and we’re pretty stoked to see what they’re all about.

Beats on the Basin: Pimps of Joytime

Three bands for FREE in one night? Yep. Not sure what’s gotten into us, but I am sure you’ll thank us for it later. From a blue-grass tinged joyride straight out of the 80s, to filthy harmonica solos rooted in Appalachia, to the funky “groove machine” that is Pimps of Joytime, there’s bound to be something to get you up and moving!

Beats on the Basin: The Gin Blossoms

Ever wanted to go to sleep and wake up back in 1995? Yeah, we have too, and we figured what better way to do that than by hosting the one and only 1990s favorite pop rock sensations, the Gin Blossoms. Go ahead and crimp your hair and break out the JNCO jeans. This is sure to be an epic blast from the past.

Beats on the Basin: The Jakob’s Ferry Stragglers

The Jakob’s Ferry Stragglers draw freely from old-time, bluegrass, country, jazz, rockabilly and swing styles to create their tight, high-energy string band music. Well-crafted original songs with emotional depth, masterful picking, and resonant vocal harmonies combine to forge new territories and a fresh take on Appalachian Americana music.

Beats on the Basin: JJ Lawhorn

J.J. Lawhorn is a singer songwriter whose Country music ambitions have taken him from Virginia to Nashville. His unquestionable southern boy swagger along with his adept ability to express himself through song constructs a live music experience that’s perfect for our little Island in the sky.

Beats on the Basin: The Floorboards

The Floorboards are an Appalachian roots rock ensemble hailing from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Known for marrying rock and roll and country roots with the sights and sounds of Southern Mountain towns, the Floorboards have quickly become a staple in the roots music scene and are branching out with purpose.
