Shepherdstown 4th of July Parade and Picnic
The historic town of Shepherdstown WV will hold its annual Independence Day parade and community picnic on Wednesday, July 4. Both events will be held rain or shine. Everyone is welcome at both events and admission will be free. The parade and picnic are organized annually by the Rotary Club of Shepherdstown. The goal is to provide wholesome, family-oriented 4th of July events that everyone can enjoy. If you're looking for an old-fashioned, small-town 4th of July celebration, this is it. The parade will be held starting at 11:00 a.m. downtown. It will last about an hour. Entries will include veteran's groups, antique vehicles, local societies and organizations of all kinds, local businesses, government officials, children's groups, animals, historical re-enactors, fire trucks, and more. Plenty of parade parking will be available in the Shepherd University parking lot at the edge of downtown on High Street. The picnic will be held right after the parade, from 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m., in the pavilion at Morgan's Gove Park on Kearneysville Pike (Route 480) just southwest of town. The picnic will feature live music, with two popular local bands. The Speakeasy Boys will play from noon to 1:30 p.m. and the Gypsy Ramblers will play from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. There will be lots of free children's activities, including a waterslide, scavenger hunt, a water balloon toss, face painting, and more. The Rotary Club will be selling hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, and non-alcoholic beverages at reasonable prices. All proceeds from those sales are used to help cover event costs. People can bring their own picnic lunches if they prefer. There is plenty of parking at the park. Afternoon With Mark Twain
American author and humorist Mark Twain will be portrayed by Doug Riley of Tunnelton as part of the West Virginia Humanities Council's History Alive program. The pen name for Samuel Clemens, Twain is known for works such as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Ironically, he died April 21, 1910. The free performance is in the historic Alpine Theatre, 210 W. Main Street in downtown Ripley.

70th Anniversary Airshow
Charleston’s Yeager Airport and the West Virginia Air National Guard's 130th Airlift Wing will celebrate their 70th anniversary with an air show Sept. 30-Oct. 1, featuring flying demonstrations, aircraft displays and tours, and rides aboard World War II-era aircraft. The air show will include several examples of aircraft associated with the airport during its early years, including a Curtiss C-46 Commando transport plane — the first aircraft assigned to the West Virginia Air Guard’s 130th Airlift Wing — and an American Airlines DC-3, the first commercial aircraft to operate at Kanawha Airport during its 1947 debut. A World War II-era P-51 fighter will be part of a “Rise Above” traveling exhibit detailing the history of the Tuskegee Airmen, who formed the first two squadrons of black fighter pilots given the opportunity to serve in the U.S. military and did so with distinction during World War II. Other aircraft committed to taking part in the air show, so far, include World War II-era B-17 Flying Fortress and B-25 Mitchell bombers and a C-47 Skytrain transport from the Yankee Air Museum. Also scheduled are a World War I-era Curtiss JN-4 Jenny biplane, a Stinson L-5 “Flying Jeep” single-engine observation plane, a T-6 Texan training aircraft for fighter pilots and a World War II-era Grumman TMB Avenger torpedo bomber. Rides will be available aboard the B-17 and B-25 bombers for a fee. Rides can be booked at http://yankeeairmuseum.org/fly/ Entry to the air show will be free, with parking available on the airfield from an entry gate at the general aviation area. Overflow parking will be available in Yeager Airport’s long-term parking garages. Buses will shuttle air show attendees from the parking areas to the entry gate. Watoga Art in the Park features a great fun- filled weekend for families set in one of West Virginia's most beautiful parks – Watoga State Park. Beech Bark Disease: A Long Established Forest Disease in West Virginia Reaches Monongalia County
Beech bark disease was first reported in WV in the early 1980s and has since spread throughout the higher elevations in eastern part of the state. In April 2016, BBD was discovered for the first time at the West Virginia Botanic Garden. 16th Annual Audubon Race for the Birds
The Potomac Valley Audubon Society will hold its 16th annual "Race for the Birds!" in Shepherdstown WV on Saturday, April 8, 2017. The event will be held at the same location as last year: Wild Goose Farm at 293 Shepherd Grade Road. The farm is just across the road from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services' National Conservation Training Center. The 2017 event will include two professionally timed races—one 5 kilometers long and another 10 kilometers long. There will also be a 1-mile "Fun Run" for children under 10 years of age. In addition, adults and families who wish to walk or jog the 5K course at their own pace may do so. The 5K and 10K races will follow non-technical cross-country trails through the farm's scenic fields, rolling hills and woods. The course will be suitable for all runners. The 5K and 10K races will begin at 9:00 a.m. The children's Fun Run will be held at about 10:45 a.m. The children's Fun Run will be free. The fees for the 5K and 10K races will be $25 and $30, respectively, for those who pre-register before March 25. Same-day registration will be $5 more for both distances. Registration for the 5K and 10K races will be capped at 400 for both, so same-day registration may not be available. The Music and the Mountains Old Time Festival
The Music and the Mountains Old Time Festival will showcase and celebrate Appalachian culture and craft. This community based, family friendly event will bring together local artisans and musicians to provide an opportunity for our local community and visitors to experience Appalachian craft demonstrations, old time music and dance traditions along with regional food. Friday night's concert will feature old time, traditional Appalachian music. Saturday afternoon events will include: local craft demonstrations, a display of regional archival photographs, old time children's games and activities, an open old time community jam, a cornbread contest and a soup bean dinner. Saturday night will offer beginner square dance lessons and a square dance bard and caller.

31st Annual Great Greenbrier River Race
The Great Greenbrier River Race is a triathlon held in Marlinton, consisting of a 3 mile run, a 4 mile river trip by kayak or canoe, and a 10 mile bike ride. This triathlon takes place along the Greenbrier River Trail and is for the young and old alike. The Great Greenbrier River Race is a family friendly event, and people come from 13 different states to enjoy the event. It's also become a great spectator sport so if you're not in it, come out and cheer for the rest of them.
Red Tail Ring
Red Tail Ring is the musical brainchild of two old-time-minded Michiganders – Michael Beauchamp and Laurel Premo. The collaboration blends the loving attention of revivalist fervor with the playful creativity of starting from scratch. Augusta Dance
The Mountain Dance Trail, a heritage tourism project of the Augusta Heritage Center of Davis & Elkins College, will host its monthly square dance on Friday, February 10, in Myles Center for the Arts Pit Dance Studio on the College campus. The event will feature music by Gerry Milnes and friends, with Mary Alice Milnes calling square dances. A beginners’ workshop is set for 7:45 p.m. and the dance starts at 8 p.m. All dances are beginner and family friendly and participants don’t need to come with a dance partner. Admission is $6 for general public, $4 for students and AmeriCorps members, and free to Davis & Elkins College students, faculty and staff. This is an informally timed, non-competitive, family-oriented trail walk/run on the rolling hills of Grand Vue Park.
