BKO is a power quintet from BAMAKO Associating the guitar of griots with the lute of Bambara hunters had never been undertaken before in the Malian music universe. It is indeed two opposite worlds that BKO have decided to bring up together in order to develop a resolutely urban music style rooted in secular tradition.
Capital City Challenge Triathlon – Run, Row, Ride
Welcome to the Capital City Challenge! The race consists of a 4.2 mile run, a 4.2 mile row, and a 16.8 mile bike ride all along the banks of the Kanawha River. Individuals and groups of two or three are all encouraged to participate. This unique yet competitive event is designed for competitors of all fitness and skill levels. This family-friendly challenge features music, kids' activities, and great door prizes. Solo and team entries are welcome. THE COURSE The order of the race is RUN (4.2 miles from Magic Island to Daniel Boone Park); ROW (4.2 miles from Daniel Boone Park to Magic Island); RIDE (16.8 miles all on paved roads - a 3 loop course from Magic Island to Veazey Street and back to Magic Island - then repeat). The Start-Finish is at Magic Island which is next to the I-64 bridge along the Kanawha River.

Cabezas’ appearance is made possible by a partnership with Astral Artists. Gary Fry, composer GARY FRY, COMPOSER Gary Fry is an Emmy-winning Chicago-based composer with a passion for working with young people, particularly in choral music. The WVSO commissioned Fry to write a special arrangement featuring the WVSO and the Appalachian Children’s Chorus.

Jennifer Higdon, composer JENNIFER HIGDON, COMPOSER Jennifer Higdon is one of America’s most acclaimed composers and a Grammy Award winner who was once hailed by the Washington Post as having “a keen ear, an innate sense of form and a generous dash of pure esprit.” Higdon’s orchestral work, blue cathedral, which the WVSO will perform in January 2019, is one of the most performed contemporary orchestral compositions by a living American.

2018 Easter Carnival at the State Capitol
The annual Easter Carnival at the State Capitol will take place Saturday, March 31 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Easter Bunny will be on hand for pictures with children and families. There will be games, face painting, clowns and craft stations for children to enjoy and food stations with hot dogs, popcorn and other snacks. At noon, there will be drawings for children's bicycles. The Easter Carnival is free and open to the public.

Irish Road Bowling – Kanawha State Forest
Irish Road Bowling consists of a ball made of iron and steel that is heavy enough to pick up speed, yet small enough for any person to handle. Besides the basic rules and terms, all you do is hurl this 28 oz. sized "bowl" with an underhand motion over a 1 to 2 mile country road and see how far it goes! Scored like golf, the fewest number of shots from the start to the finish line wins. Irish Road Bowling is similar to fast pitch softball, except with a running start. It's also like bowling if you had enough room to run 10 or 15 yards. Irish Road Bowling is ideal for young athletes or seniors who are looking to enjoy a scenic walk on a country road, combined with an ancient and exciting, but not overly strenuous, sport! Located just seven miles south of Charleston, West Virginia, Kanawha State Forest is in close proximity to the heavily populated Kanawha Valley and is a recreational haven. The 9,300-acre forest is noted among naturalists for its diverse wildflower and bird populations. Rich cove forest sites provide nesting habitat for 19 species of wood warblers, a feature which draws birders from as far away as Canada. 2018 National Hometown Heroes Boxing Championships
See amateur boxing at its best, on the grassroots level. Approximately 125 athletes are expected to compete in the 2018 National Hometown Heroes Boxing Championships Feb. 16 – 18 at the Beni Kedem Shriners Center in Charleston. The program works with athletes from the age of 8 up to develop individual integrity, character, physical and mental fitness, and personal objectives through the competitive sport of boxing. This competition is a USA Boxing-sanctioned event, and participants are matched based on age, weight, and experience. Gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded, as are team trophies and special awards. Enjoy the thrill of the fight and high-caliber sportsmanship while supporting youth boxing at its finest. Charleston Cycling Classic
Officially permitted and sanctioned with USA Cycling. July 21-22, 2018, the hip, historic city of Charleston, WV, will be the center of a three-event, two-day stage race testing cyclists with an individual time trial, a criterium, and a road race to determine an overall winner. All cyclists will race the same courses for the time trial and the criterium, starting and ending at Haddad Riverfront Park in downtown Charleston, WV. The road races will be contested over three different distances, and will also start and finish at Haddad Riverfront Park.

FOOTMAD presents Trio Da Kali
Malian supergroup performing in the Mandé griot tradition -- mixing the old with new songs to give a contemporary modern edge. Trio Da Kali unites three outstanding musicians from the Mande culture of southern Mali who come from a long line of distinguished griots (hereditary musicians). The trio sings, plays the balafon (a type of wooden xylophone) and a West African stringed instrument called a bass ngoni. Matthew Stephen "M." Ward is a singer-songwriter and guitarist from Portland, Oregon. Ward's solo work is mixture of folk and blues-inspired Americana analog recordings; he has released eight albums since 1999, primarily through independent label Merge Records. In addition to his solo work, he is a member of pop duo She & Him and folk-rock supergroup Monsters of Folk, and also participates in recording, producing, and playing with multiple other artists.

Lee Ann Womack is an American country music singer and songwriter. The Road Show

Rubber Soul, (Tribute to John, Paul, George and Ringo) local Beatles tribute band, in conjunction with Fund For the Arts, is sponsoring a community event on Groundhog Day, February 2, 2018. We are calling this a community event because it will involve a who’s who of local and world musicians performing the music of the Beatles for a great cause. This event “With A Little Help From Our Friends: The Marathon Concert” will involve the continuous, live performance of all (206 to be exact) of the Beatle’s songs. The plan is to start about 12:00 noon on Friday February 2 and complete around midnight. Hosted by Larry Groce, the core band Rubber Soul, will play continuous songs stopping only to welcome featured musicians to the stage to sit-in.

WV Hunting & Fishing Show
Each year in January, we present the West Virginia Hunting and Fishing ShowSM at the Civic Center in Charleston, West Virginia. All proceeds, except for costs to run the show and club operating expenses, are donated to programs that promote or protect hunting, fishing, wildlife, conservation, and related educational activities. We only solicit vendors of high quality products and services related to the sport of hunting and fishing. The show features exhibitors from as far away as Alaska, New Zealand, Spain, and Africa, plus the United States and Canada. We are all 100% volunteers. In conjunction with the show, we run the West Virginia Whitetail Hall of FameSM. The West Virginia Whitetail Hall of FameSM provides an opportunity for individuals to bring their West Virginia deer trophies in for official scoring and to display the largest racks harvested. You may bring as many mounts in to be scored as you wish. Bring your tags for the deer for official WV DNR scoring.
