These 3 Hikes are Perfect for the Entire Family
Almost Heaven is full of trails that lead to breathtaking views. If you’re interested in experiencing some of these iconic views with children, consider one of these hikes.
Pinnacle Rock State Park
Located in Mercer County, Pinnacle Rock State Park is easily accessible and offers incredible panoramic views of southern West Virginia. Hike the well-maintained trail & stairs to the top of the 3,100-foot sandstone formation that gives the park its name. Take in the views from the observation deck, and when you’re finished, make your way just a few minutes down Route 52 to Bramwell. Enjoy lunch at the Corner Shop and discover the history of the “Town of Millionaires.”
Spruce Knob
Despite being the tallest point in West Virginia at 4,863 feet, Spruce Knob is easily accessible. Visitors can drive to the top of the mountain, tracing their way past amazing scenic views. There are more than 75 miles of hiking trails, but one of the most popular hikes is on top of the mountain and loops flat from the parking lot to the overlook tower and along several jaw-dropping overlooks. While you’re there, visit Spruce Knob Lake and stay overnight on the mountain in a yurt – perfect for stargazing.
Long Point Trail
Located just outside of charming Fayetteville, Long Point Trail is regarded as one of the most iconic hikes in the state. The 1.6 mile trail is moderate with very low difficulty, and it leads visitors to a panoramic view of the New River Gorge and New River Gorge Bridge. If you time your visit correctly, you’ll get a glimpse of whitewater rafters working their way down the rapids of the New River. After your hike, explore downtown Fayetteville and eat at a local favorite like Pies & Pints or Secret Sandwich Society. Historic Thurmond, Babcock State Park and Hawks Nest State Park are all a short drive from Fayetteville and are all perfect for family adventures.
Adventure is waiting for you in Almost Heaven. Pack your hiking gear and prepare for unique journeys you won’t find anywhere else.
