Fall Color is Lasting Longer than Ever in West Virginia – Week of 10/31/24

As October comes to an end, West Virginia is experiencing some of the longest-lasting fall foliage ever. Every travel region in the Mountain State is now showcasing vibrant hues and the colors just don’t seem to be in a hurry to leave.

This week, plan a leaf peeping adventure at these Almost Heaven spots and see in real-time with the help of our Live Leaf Map.

Harpers Ferry

Harpers Ferry is full of so much history – and fall foliage. Take a spine-tingling tour with the Ghost Tour of Harpers Ferry, which is featured on the West Virginia Paranormal Trail. Also, learn the incredible story of John Brown and his raid on Harpers Ferry at John Brown’s Fort. You don’t want to miss a fall trip to the town where Thomas Jefferson once wrote that the view from Harpers Ferry was “one of the most stupendous scenes in nature.”

Seneca Rocks

Ascending nearly 900 feet, Seneca Rocks in Pendleton County is a magnificent formation that is especially picturesque when surrounded by deep crimsons and bright yellows. Be rewarded with jaw-dropping sights after the 1.3-mile trek up the hill. Once you’ve reached the top, take a break on the observation deck and soak in the breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains – all dressed in vibrant fall colors. Learn world-class rock climbing skills at NROCKS Outdoor Adventures or experience the Via Ferrata with a guided tour.

Ritter Park

The Metro Valley of Almost Heaven is showing historically stunning fall foliage, and that is especially the case with the city of Huntington. Take a peaceful, serene stroll through the scenic Ritter Park to catch trees dressed in remarkable shades of autumn. There are several walking trails along Four Pole Creek as well as picnic tables and shelters for a lovely fall picnic.

Hawks Nest State Park

Make a stop at Hawks Nest State Park for sweeping views of peak foliage. Explore 270-acre recreational hotspot has several scenic miles of hiking trails and one of the most challenging whitewater boating waterways in the nation. While here, check out Turkey Creek Falls and Mill Creek Falls, which are both stops on the West Virginia Waterfall Trail. Stick around for a while in the evening and dine surrounded by breathtaking views of the New River Gorge at The Overlook restaurant.

Beech Fork State Park

Beech Fork State Park is the perfect spot to get away and go leaf-peeping. Cozy up in one of six fully equipped vacation cabins perched on a ridge line above Beech Fork Lake – with two being pet-friendly. These beautiful cabins are distinguished by their open-trussed ceilings and large decks. Spend your day playing a game of disc golf with your friends and hike amongst incredible leaf-peeping opportunities.

Summersville Lake State Park

Summersville Lake at Summersville Lake State Park boasts beautiful scenery all-year-round as it’s nicknamed the “Little Bahamas of the East,” but you’ll be stunned by the sight of the clear waters surrounded by autumn hues. Discover Summersville Lake encircled by a kaleidoscope of deep reds and oranges when visiting this week. Hike Long Point Trail, a relatively easy 3.9-mile out-and-back path, for the area’s best vantage points.

There are still plenty of Almost Heaven destinations that have yet to reach peak fall foliage. Sign up for our weekly newsletter and don’t miss out on our West Virginia fall foliage updates!
