On the National Register of Historic Places, this site is where John Brown, his sons, and at least five black men attempted to seize the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry on October 16, 1859, in an effort to instigate an armed insurrection of enslaved people and abolitionists. John Brown and his men were captured in the building, and Brown was hanged in Charles Town on December 2, 1859.
