Fall has finally arrived in Almost Heaven, and the season has brought crisp, cool air, beautiful fall foliage and amazing adventures with it. This fall, grab your favorite warm jacket and get ready for mountain adventures all season long.

Beautiful Fall Hikes

West Virginia is perfect to hike year-round but something about the cool, mountain air and the changing leaves in the fall makes hiking that more special. Experience these hikes for stunning views and scenery:

Island-In-The-Sky Trail

Babcock State Park is known for its incredible fall foliage. The park’s Island-In-The-Sky Trail passes by the iconic grist mill and features beautiful vistas and high cliff areas. Although it is not a very long trail, keep in mind there are rocky and steep sections along the hike.

Dolly Sods Wilderness Area

The Dolly Sods Wilderness Area is beautiful year-round, but in the fall its unique scenery treats hikers to breathtaking views with brilliant colors. Dolly Sods includes 47 miles of rugged trails to explore all season long.

Lindy Point Trail

Situated in Blackwater Falls State Park, the Lindy Point Trail provides incredible views of Blackwater Canyon and its multicolored fall foliage. This hike is only 0.8 miles, so it’s a quick hike to the most incredible views.

Fall ATV Adventures

West Virginia is home to the Hatfield-McCoy Trail System, an off-roading trail system and one of the largest systems in the country. This fall discover mountainous terrain, endless back country and incredible thrills.

Bearwallow

One of the three original trail systems of the Hatfield-McCoy Trails, Bearwallow takes riders to scenic vistas and features difficult trails.

Rockhouse

The Rockhouse Trail System includes direct access to the ATV-friendly towns of Man and Gilbert, both offer dining, lodging and southern hospitality.

Pocahontas

The Pocahontas Trail Systems trailhead is located in Coaldale, which is just outside of the town of Bramwell, which is historically known for its numerous millionaire homes form the early 20th century.

Fall Whitewater Rafting

Whitewater rafting in West Virginia is always an amazing adventure but something about the crisp air and surrounding fall foliage makes rafting in the fall even more incredible. From mild to wild, experience Almost Heaven’s iconic whitewater this fall.

Gauley River

Each year, the weekend after Labor Day the Summersville Dam executes a series of scheduled releases into the Gauley River creating world-class Class V rapids. During this time, rafters will get to experience iconic Class V rapids like Insignificant Rapid, Lost Paddle Rapid and Sweet’s Falls Rapid.

New River

Divided into two sections, the New River Gorge National River has been attracting rafters for more than 50 years. The Upper New is perfect for families and beginner rafters and the Lower new is great for experienced rafters looking for a more challenging whitewater trip.
