Coopers Rock State Forest

Located less than 15 miles from Morgantown, Coopers Rock State Forest is a hotspot for nature activities including hiking, fishing and camping. Valley Falls State Park

Fairmont, West Virginia

Valley Falls State Park in Marion County is a nature lover’s dream with its variety of recreational activities. Strap on your hiking footwear and pack your mountain bike for 18 miles of trails. Explore the dark, rushing waters of the Tygart Valley River that flow into Valley Falls – intertwining between rock faces at 10-foot drops.

Caperton Trail

Morgantown, West Virginia

Caperton Trail is a paved five-mile trail located in Morgantown and Star City. This trail connects the Mon River Trails north and south and the Deckers Creek Trail. The trail runs past Hazel Ruby McQuain Park, WVU Core Arboretum and Tug Boat Depot. Recreational uses include in-line skating, walking, jogging, cycling, and cross-country skiing. Watters Smith Memorial State Park

Lost Creek, West Virginia

Add a bit of history inspiration to your nature exploration at Watters Smith Memorial State Park in Lost Creek. The heritage of early West Virginia is preserved in this pioneer homestead restoration, which adds a historic twist to your hikes along six trails. Between all the trails, there are over 14 miles to explore. Take a trip to the 1700s and get in the pioneer spirit.

Core Arboretum

Morgantown, West Virginia

The West Virginia University Core Arboretum is an outdoor facility for education, research and recreation. The Arboretum has three miles of foot trails, lawns with planted trees and shrubs, old growth forest on hillside and floodplain sites, interpretive signs, trailside benches and a small amphitheater. Explorers enjoy spotting spring ephemeral wildflowers from late March to early May.

Take a stroll through the forest as some of the large trees are likely over 200 years old. Varied habitats and riverside location also make the area an excellent site to observe birds and animals.
