All about the Summit Bechtel Reserve
Located in Raleigh County, West Virginia, the Summit Bechtel Reserve is home to the National Scout Jamboree and other events, most recently the World Scout Jamboree. It is composed of 100 acres of varied terrain, including rolling hills and steep inclines.
There are three different races
This year’s Spartan has three different race options: Beast, Super and Sprint. The Spartan Beast is 13 miles with 20 obstacles. The Spartan Super is 8 miles and has 25 obstacles. The Spartan Sprint is perfect for beginners at 3 miles and 20 obstacles. For those up for a challenge, you get a Spartan Trifecta Medal if you complete all three races in a calendar year.
Obstacles include spear throws, a barbed wire crawl, monkey bars, a wall climb and more. Obstacles vary in difficulty. If you can’t complete an obstacle, that’s okay, the penalty challenge is 30 burpees to keep going.
Kids can participate, too
The Spartan Race has activities for kids, too. Sign your little Spartan up for the Kids Race where they can show off their skills on the obstacle course and get a little muddy while they’re at it. The Spartan Kids Race has three different races for different age groups, ranging from half a mile to 2 miles in length.
You’ll be surrounded by adventure
The Bechtel Summit Reserve is in the heart of Almost Heaven. You will be minutes away from the New River Gorge National River and a ton of outdoor activities. Whether you want to try your hand at whitewater rafting, go horseback riding, or zipline through the trees, area outfitters have you covered. If you’re in the mood for local restaurants, shops and breweries, nearby cities of Beckley and Fayetteville have plenty of dining and shopping options for the entire family.
