Cabwaylingo State Forest ☑️

Spanning more than 8,000 heavily forested acres, Cabwaylingo State Forest is a beautiful woodland in southern West Virginia where hunting is permitted during the appropriate seasons. Common species include white-tailed deer, wild turkey, squirrel, rabbit, and ruffed grouse. Extend your visit into a multi-day expedition with a stay in one of the cabins tucked within this stunning forest.

Monongahela National Forest ☑️

One of West Virginia’s most beloved landscapes, the Monongahela National Forest is known for its untouched terrain and serene atmosphere. In permitted areas during appropriate seasons, hunters can track white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and other small game. To witness the forest from a birds-eye-view, take the climb up the Bickle Knob Observation Tower or Olson Observation Tower.

Short Mountain Wildlife Management Area ☑️

Home to the West Virginia black bear, Short Mountain Wildlife Management Area covers more than 8,000 acres with mixed oak and Virginia pine. Along with black bear, licensed hunters may pursue a variety of species, including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, squirrel, ruffed grouse, and furbearers. This area also includes sections of the North River, which offer fishing opportunities when stocked and in season.

Greenbrier River ☑️

From fly fishing for trout in cooler sections to casting for smallmouth bass in warm stretches, fishing on the Greenbrier River provides a wonderful experience for anglers of all kinds. Divided into three sections, the river offers numerous access points throughout the state. The upper section lies near Cass and Durbin, the middle stretch runs from Caldwell to Ronceverte, and the lower section continues from Ronceverte downstream to Alderson. This spot is also popular for half and full-day float fishing trips.

Stonewall Resort State Park ☑️

Just three miles off I-79 lies pristine waters at Stonewall Resort State Park, home to more than 80 miles of glistening shoreline. From boats to kayaks, the diverse fishery includes largemouth bass, walleye, muskellunge, crappie, bluegill, and channel catfish. Visitors are welcome to bring their own gear or rent from the marina. Complete with on-site lodging, restaurants, and endless adventure options, this spot makes for a perfect family getaway.

Summersville Lake ☑️

The largest lake in the state, the waters of Summersville Lake attract visitors from across the country. The impressive cliffs and crystal-clear waters make it a lovely destination for both fishing and boating.
