American Conservation Film Festival

Friends of Music Concert featuring Two Rivers String Quartet

The Friends of Music will launch their new concert season on September 23 with a performance by the Two Rivers String Quartet and a featured clarinet. The concert will be held in Shepherdstown's Trinity Episcopal Church, on German Street, at 7:30 p.m. The program will include two works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, his Quartet No. 21 in D Major and his Clarinet Quintet in A Major; and "Bagatelles for Clarinet and Strings"(Op. 23), by 20th Century British composer Gerald Finzi. Admission to the concert will be free for Friends of Music members. The ticket price for others will be $20 per person ($18 before September 10). Memberships and tickets can be purchased on the Friends' website at www.friendswv.org or by mail (FOM, PO Box 220, Shepherdstown, WV 25443) or, if space is available, at the church the evening of the performance. Visa and Master Card will be accepted. The Friends of Music is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1999 to support and promote musical excellence. This year's concert season is supported in part by a grant from the WV Division of Culture and History and the National Endowment for the Arts, with approval from the WV Commission on the Arts. The featured clarinetist for the September 23 concert will be David Drosinos. Mr. Drosinos has performed in Greece, Ireland, Moscow, Finland, the Bahamas and all over the continental U.S. He teaches at The Baltimore School for the Arts, The Peabody Preparatory, and Shepherd University. The Two Rivers String Quartet includes the following musicians: Heather Austin-Stone, Violin. Ms. Austin-Stone is currently the Concertmaster of the Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra, the Assistant Concertmaster with the Maryland Symphony Orchestra, and a section 1st violinist with the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra. Camilo Perez-Mejia, Cello. Mr. Perez-Mejia is a member of the Temple Trio, Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra, Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Greater Washington, and principal cellist for the National String Symphonia. He is also the Music Director and Conductor of the Charles Washington Symphony. Dana Rokosny, Viola. Ms. Rokosny is principal violist of the Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra and performs regularly with the Maryland Symphony Orchestra and other orchestras in the Baltimore-Washington area. Petr Skopek, Violin. Mr. Skopek is a member of the Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra, the Maryland Symphony Orchestra, the Gettysburg Chamber Orchestra and the Shippensburg Festival Orchestra.

70th Anniversary Airshow

Charleston’s Yeager Airport and the West Virginia Air National Guard's 130th Airlift Wing will celebrate their 70th anniversary with an air show Sept. 30-Oct. 1, featuring flying demonstrations, aircraft displays and tours, and rides aboard World War II-era aircraft. The air show will include several examples of aircraft associated with the airport during its early years, including a Curtiss C-46 Commando transport plane — the first aircraft assigned to the West Virginia Air Guard’s 130th Airlift Wing — and an American Airlines DC-3, the first commercial aircraft to operate at Kanawha Airport during its 1947 debut. A World War II-era P-51 fighter will be part of a “Rise Above” traveling exhibit detailing the history of the Tuskegee Airmen, who formed the first two squadrons of black fighter pilots given the opportunity to serve in the U.S. military and did so with distinction during World War II. Other aircraft committed to taking part in the air show, so far, include World War II-era B-17 Flying Fortress and B-25 Mitchell bombers and a C-47 Skytrain transport from the Yankee Air Museum. Also scheduled are a World War I-era Curtiss JN-4 Jenny biplane, a Stinson L-5 “Flying Jeep” single-engine observation plane, a T-6 Texan training aircraft for fighter pilots and a World War II-era Grumman TMB Avenger torpedo bomber. Rides will be available aboard the B-17 and B-25 bombers for a fee. Rides can be booked at http://yankeeairmuseum.org/fly/ Entry to the air show will be free, with parking available on the airfield from an entry gate at the general aviation area. Overflow parking will be available in Yeager Airport’s long-term parking garages. Buses will shuttle air show attendees from the parking areas to the entry gate. Tour the Historic Home of George Bird Evans

The Old Hemlock Foundation will open the historic home of George Bird Evans and his wife, Kay Evans, to public tours. The 1782 deeded property is on the National Register of Historic Places. The log home was built in circa 1815. The tours will tell about lives of George and Kay. This tale of love of mountains, art, music, fine writing and English Setters will share about George as an artist, author of mysteries and upland hunting, and breeding the Old Hemlock Line of English Setters. We have two public tours per year. All other visits are by appointment. There are approximately three miles of trails Old Hemlock. Visitors are welcome to use them just by dropping an email to lejay@oldhemlock.org so we know you are on the property.

The Middle Ohio Valley is rich in ancient moments--circles, squares, and even more exotic shapes; most were built about 1800 years ago. Recent aerial photograph analysis and on-the-ground geophysical surveys have found a surprising number of previously undocumented enclosure sites, as well as many new features at well-known sites.

Wheeling Symphony Orchestra presents “Bach Double & Mozart”

Stravinsky, Bach, Danielpour & Mozart André Raphel, conductor Rachel Stegeman, violin Juan Jaramillo, violin Igor Stravinsky’s charming “Pulcinella Suite” begins this all WSO concert. Stravinsky called this work his “discovery of the past” and “gateway” to his future compositions. The timeless Bach “Double Violin Concerto” highlights the virtuosity of our very own Rachel Stegeman and Juan Jaramillo. The lively concerto is characterized by the expressive counterpoint between the two violins. The concert continues with Richard Danilepour’s “Adagietto for Strings” a WSO commission that Danielpour called “…an exciting fusion, being written as it is for Wheeling—one of the smallest cities to maintain an orchestra of this caliber…” The concert concludes with Mozart’s final “Symphony, No. 41” (Jupiter) where Mozart demonstrates his sheer brilliance as a composer. Its emotional range prefigures the vast expressive canvas that foreshadow the symphonies of Beethoven.

The Inaugural BB&T Malden Salt Fest will be held October 6th to 8th in Malden at J.Q. Dickinson Salt-Works. There will be music, food, tours, a parade, dancing, crafts, demonstrations, and more! October 6th: Dinner at J.Q. Dickinson Salt-Works for descendants of salt-works owners, workers, and slaves. 19th Annual Elizabethtown Festival

— The 19th annual Elizabethtown Festival is planned for Sept. 16 at the Moundsville Center, inside the walls of the former West Virginia Penitentiary. The festival celebrates the traditions and customs of the past with bread making, quilt displays, weaving, and many craft items for sale. In 1999, the Moundsville Economic Development Council (MEDC) sponsored the first Elizabethtown Festival celebrating the long-forgotten town Joseph Tomlinson, an Irish immigrant’s son, established in 1738 and named in honor of his wife, Elizabeth. Elizabethtown was the first settlement on the “Flats of Grave Creek” and the Tomlinson family built their dwelling near the site of the Moundsville Middle School. Elizabethtown merged with neighboring Moundsville to become one town in 1866 and on Feb. 23 of that year, the first city officials of the town were named with many family names still local to the area today. The Elizabethtown Festival, originally offered as an 1800s heritage festival, has grown to now include items from the past to the present. Demonstrations of historic trades, food and musical entertainment, along with a cookie and apple pie baking contest, “Anything BUT Chili Soup Contest” and historical memorabilia displays make this event perfect for the entire family. Admission is free! This year, organizers are collaborating with the Uptown Moundsville Activities Committee Fall Festival to hold a large one-day event with a car and motorcycle show. By joining together, the two groups will offer more unique shopping and demonstration opportunities, along with giving locals and travelers more reasons to visit the area. Walk for Freedom

Walk for Freedom is a walk to bring awareness to Human Trafficking. It takes place in countries across the world on October 14th and we are bringing it Charleston. It was started by and organization called a21 and their main goal, other then ending Human Trafficking, is to reach, rescue, and restore victims of Human Trafficking. We will start at Haddad Riverfront Park and walk down Kanawha Blvd to the Capitol building and back. Distance is a little over a 5k. History Center Museum – Upshur County Doctors, Nurses and Undertakers

Summer 2017 Museum Exhibit: Upshur County Doctors, Nurses and Undertakers - If we can't cure you, we'll bury you. Come to downtown Buckhannon to walk through one of the oldest structures in the area, that features a museum exhibit Sunday afternoons from 1 - 4 PM. The Museum's building is one of the oldest historic landmarks in Upshur County. During the Civil War, the structure was commandeered for use by the Federal government (as were most churches in this area) as a food commissary. Betty Hornbeck, in her book Upshur Brothers of the Blue and Gray, writes that on August 30, 1862, following a battle of "Watertank Hill" in a Confederate victory known as "Jenkins Raid", twenty to thirty captured Federal prisoners were marched first to the courthouse and.... "after the arms had been destroyed, the prisoners were taken to the Southern Methodist Church on West Main Street that was being used as a commissary. The church contained thousands of bushels of oats and corn, all of which were taken into the street and burned by the prisoners under order of Commander Jenkins. Green coffee beans were shoe deep in the street." The oil painting inside the Museum, over the front entrance depicts the looting and pillaging of the frightening night so long ago. The History Center Museum is an historic structure, built in 1856 and is the oldest extant building on Main Street, Buckhannon. It was listed on National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra

The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1896, has a long and distinguishes history celebrating some of the world’s finest conductors and musicians. The Appalachian Du/Tri is a perfect challenge for the seasoned athlete or first-time participant. It offer two races, a sprint duathlon or sprint triathlon, each with a team option.
