Wheeling is a foodie paradise, with crowd favorites like Coleman’s Fish MarketFigaretti’s and one of the best burgers in America at Avenue Eats, according to Thrillist. Sarah’s on Main serves up mouthwatering breakfast sandwiches, like their salty bread breakfast sandwich piled high with eggs, caramelized onions, crispy bacon and cheese. For craft beer lovers, the city boasts two local breweries just steps from one another: Wheeling Brewing Company and Brew KeepersThe Centre Market, founded in 1853, is a historic public market that houses various shops, eateries and more.

Entertainment

Inspired by Victorian theaters, The Capitol Theatre is an elegant, classic venue that hosts performances of all types. The theater, with its garlands, arched windows and scrolled cartouches, has hosted celebrities like Loretta Lynn and Johnny Cash as part of concerts and plays. The Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack offers the best in gaming, entertainment and more. Love live sports? The Wheeling Nailers, a hockey affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, play at the WesBanco Arena in downtown Wheeling.

While the Highlands offer your typical national chains, Wheeling has many locally owned shops and storefronts. Sib’s Antiques and Quality Furnishings specializes in collectable antiques from near and far. Etc. is a boutique gallery offering a stylish collection of one-of-a-kind works of art, antiques and jewelry. Hole ‘N Run, a local sporting goods store, can help you find the latest tennis shoes, golf equipment and more. Centre Market is home to eateries, antique shops, salons, bakeries and cafes.

Recreation

Wheeling has no shortage of recreational activities. You’ll find hiking, biking, fishing, golfing and swimming opportunities in this town. Visit Oglebay Resort to tee off at one of two professionally designed golf courses. They also have a par three course for beginners and experienced golfers alike. Wheeling Creek offers an abundance of fishing opportunities. Cast a line and reel in trout or smallmouth bass. The Wheeling Heritage Trail offers 13.5 miles of former railroad beds that loop throughout the city to provide an urban escape.

History

Wheeling has quite the history. It was the state capitol, twice! It was where outdoor advertising got its start thanks to Bloch Brothers Tobacco Company’s “Treat yourself to the Best” campaign. And, during the first half of the nineteenth century, Wheeling was the only manufacturer of cut nails west of Pittsburgh. The birthplace of West Virginia, West Virginia Independence Hall is a museum dedicated to the history of the state. Talk about a feat, the Wheeling Suspension Bridge spans the Ohio River and was the largest suspension bridge in the world from 1849 until 1851.
