Visit Oglebay Resort to tee off at one of two professionally designed golf courses. They also have a par three course for beginners and experienced golfers alike. Wheeling Creek offers an abundance of fishing opportunities. Cast a line and reel in trout or smallmouth bass. The Wheeling Heritage Trail offers 13.5 miles of former railroad beds that loop throughout the city to provide an urban escape.
History
Wheeling has quite the history. It was the state capitol, twice! It was where outdoor advertising got its start thanks to Bloch Brothers Tobacco Company’s “Treat yourself to the Best” campaign. And, during the first half of the nineteenth century, Wheeling was the only manufacturer of cut nails west of Pittsburgh. The birthplace of West Virginia, West Virginia Independence Hall is a museum dedicated to the history of the state. Talk about a feat, the Wheeling Suspension Bridge spans the Ohio River and was the largest suspension bridge in the world from 1849 until 1851.
