What makes Tucker County so special?
Higher elevations typically bring early, more vibrant fall foliage, and Tucker County has an elevation range perfect for long-lasting colors. Between 1,500 and just over 4,800 feet above sea level, this region spreads its peak colors over several weeks. Tucker County also has an array of deciduous trees, including several types of maple, oak, beech, birch, ash and numerous others. Combining all this with the crisp nights, sunny days and the geography of several viewing points, this slice of Almost Heaven always impresses photographers and casual explorers alike.



Canaan Valley Resort State Park
Canaan Valley Resort State Park is on a high plateau in the Allegheny Mountains. This mountain retreat is home to unparalleled natural beauty and recreational activities, and during the fall, all the views come to life with fall color. Walk on 11 scenic trails that guide you deep into the fall foliage. Hop on two wheels and explore 18 miles of wide-open biking trails. There’s a path for all skill levels here, so experienced riders and newbies alike enjoy the trails.
Hit the green in fall colors on the 18-hole, par 72 course designed by Geoffrey Cornish. This challenging course is ranked 12th in the state and will wow you with the surrounding mountain backdrop. While you’re here, get your picture taken on the Almost Heaven swing! If you book a room overnight in one of the 160 cozy rooms in the lodge, you’ll wake up to a view of beautiful colors through your window.

What’s one of the best parts about fall in West Virginia? Our answer is exploring a charming town with a pumpkin spice drink in your hand. In Thomas, park along East Avenue and take a stroll down the stretch of local shops and restaurants and enjoy the view of the North Fork Blackwater River. Stop at Tip Top for a delicious seasonal drink, snag homemade baked goods and pepperoni rolls. Check out or purchase local art displayed at Santangelo. For delicious Appalachian dinner options, crisp drinks and excellent live entertainment, try the Purple Fiddle. Take a walk along the Blackwater Canyon Trail, which runs along the North Fork Blackwater River, and enjoy the surrounding fall hues.


Blackwater Falls State Park
Named for its iconic amber-colored falls of the Blackwater River, Blackwater Falls State Park is a leaf peeper’s dream. This is a fan-favorite spot year-round, so the stunning 57-foot Blackwater Falls, accompanied by a breadth of gold, orange and crimson hues, makes the experience even better. Along the ADA-accessible boardwalk is an Almost Heaven swing, making the perfect spot to get your crunchy leaf season selfie in. You can also take a scenic hike on 21 different trails, ranging from easy to challenging.



Dolly Sods Wilderness
While stunning all year round, Dolly Sods Wilderness looks even better in fall hues. This region is a favorite among avid hikers and casual explorers alike. Explore more than 17,000 acres across the Monongahela National Forest in Tucker, Randolph and Grant counties. Elevations range from 2,500 to over 4,700 feet, so you’ll be in for a leaf-peeping treat no matter where you are in the wilderness. For a quick heart pump, Beaver Dam Trail is just 1.4 miles out-and-back and only takes 40 minutes to complete.
