The Perfect 48-Hours on Snowshoe Mountain

Snowshoe Mountain in Pocahontas County is one of the most unique destinations in Almost Heaven. The second-highest elevation at just over 4,800 feet, this mountain is a sought-after spot for all things winter sports and more. Major travel publications including Northern Virginia Magazine and Thrillist praised this resort for its gravity-defying slopes, plentiful amenities and variety of dining options.

Enjoy the extra snowy atmosphere from the lake-effect winter storms and crisp mountain breezes in the warmer seasons. The high views from the top of the mountain, combined with the elegant village buildings and stone walkways, are distinct enough to make you think you’ve stepped foot into a European winter sports destination. With many delicious dining options and shops at the top, you will never be short on activities while you’re off the slopes.

This winter, spend 48 hours at Snowshoe Mountain Resort and explore all of the adventures that this mountain has to offer.

Breakfast Before the Big Slopes

Open bright and early at 8 a.m., the Junction Ale House is a cozy spot to try the Mountaineer Breakfast and other breakfast items before a day full of snowy adventures. If you’re feeling something more on-the-go, head to the Waffle Cabin and enjoy hot, gourmet waffles slopeside.

Hit the Slopes

The Basin

With the lake-effect storms and state-of-the-art snow machines producing more than 180 inches of annual snowfall, Snowshoe has you covered for world-class skiing. The Basin area is loved for its 37 trails, 800-foot vertical drop, two Mountaineer Terrain Parks and seven lifts. Seasoned skiers especially enjoy Widowmaker, Knot Bumper and Choker. If you’re experienced but want a more relaxed skiing adventure, Skipjack and Gandy Dancer are perfect intermediate trails. Skidder is perfectly suited for starters who aspire to be avid skiers one day.

Silver Creek

Silver Creek is perfect for those who like a little bit of everything, with 18 trails (12 open for night skiing), six lifts and 100 percent snowmaking. Give uphill skiing a try to break out your new splitboard or alpine touring equipment. You can also try out Snowshoe’s terrain parks, Timberjack and Mountaineer. Regardless of how experienced you are, you will find a course that complements your skill level.

Want to sprawl out or sit down while you’re soaring the slopes? Coca-Cola Tube Park will wow you with its six-story, eight-lane tube park. You can even tube at night as the park has LED lights scattered around the area.

Want to take a break from the snowy speed? The Bear’s Den will warm you up. Enjoy arcade games, pool tables, axe throwing, grab-and-go food, craft beer and so much more.

Village Shopping

While exploring the mountain, be sure to collect some mountain memorabilia and gear up as needed. 4848′ has a wide selection of activewear, casual wear and outdoor apparel from brands like Volcum, Quicksilver, Sorel, Smith and many more. Outdoor enthusiasts also enjoy shopping for adventure wear at Pocahontas Supply Company, which is located on the bottom floor of Highland House. Full Tilt Skate and Snow is another great option for finding the latest outerwear and accessories.

For all things snowsports, Mountain Adventure Center, or “The MAC,” is your ticket to finding world-class gear and equipment to take your mountain adventures to another level. The MAC has everything you could possibly need, including snowboards, skis and safety equipment. To sweeten up your shopping experience, Signatures & Sweets of Snowshoe has a wide variety of candies and snacks. Take pieces of Snowshoe home with you – from decorative ornaments and mugs to signature Snowshoe apparel.

A Snowy Supper

Surrounded by more than 20 delicious dining options, you’ll never be short on dinner options at Snowshoe. Enjoy a few hot slices from Cheat Mountain Pizza accompanied by craft beer. You can also order their sandwiches, specialty pizzas, cocktails and so much more.

Located at the top of Soaring Eagle lift in the Top of the World complex is Hoots Bar and Grill. Whether you are here for dinner or you want a place to grab a bite between hills and thrills, this fast-casual bar has American classics like burgers, chicken sandwiches, wings and salads. For an upscale dining experience, find a table at 10 Prime and treat yourself to a tender steak and a glass of wine.
