These 3 state parks are the best to visit in winter
Exploring West Virginia is always an exciting adventure, and it can be even more fun in the winter. In fact, the Mountain State has several beautiful state parks that make for the perfect winter destinations to make lifelong memories. Visit these parks for good times, fun adventures, gorgeous views and much more:
Blackwater Falls State Park
Blackwater Falls State Park is one of the state’s most iconic spots thanks to its 57-foot cascade, which provides visitors with scenic views year-round. During the winter, the park is home to the longest sled run on the East Coast, and every year, sledders race down more than a quarter-mile of fresh mountain snow for a fun ride. Blackwater Falls State Park also has more than 10 miles of trails available for cross-country skiing, which makes for the perfect activity to explore the park’s scenic beauty.
After your adventures, warm up and stay in one of the gorgeous guest rooms at Blackwater Falls Lodge or in one of the parks cozy cabins. Fill up on delicious food at the lodge’s restaurant, The Smokehouse, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. We recommend the French toast for the perfect winter treat!
Canaan Valley Resort State Park
Tucked into the Allegheny Mountains sits the beautiful Canaan Valley Resort State Park, a four-season destination. In the winter, this park is a mecca for all adventures. The park’s activities include cross-country skiing, down hill skiing, snow tubing and ice skating. In fact, the multi-lane tube park is the longest in the Mid-Atlantic so be prepared for the kids never wanting to leave.
After a day of snow sport adventures, visit the lodge for hot cocoa and some relaxation. The lodge also features beautiful guest rooms and suites, but there are also two-three-and four-bedroom cabins and cottages at the park for all of your accommodation needs. If you feel you need some extra pampering and relaxation, visit the spa for a deep tissue massage and an organic massage facial.
Pipestem Resort State Park
Pipestem Resort State Park is gorgeous no matter what time of year it is due to the incredible views it provides from every direction. During the winter when the mountains become covered in snow, Pipestem is the perfect destination for cross-country skiing and sledding and, of course, amazing views. The park’s McKeever Lodge provides charming guest rooms and suites. There are also 26 fully-furnished cabins, which make for an amazing home base to relax in after a day spent in the snow. Some cabins are even pet-friendly so you can bring the whole family during your winter getaway.
If you get hungry, don’t worry! The park has restaurants onsite including the Bluestone Dining Room, Mountain Creek Dining Room, Black Bear Grill and Lounge and the Tramway Sweets and Treats. End your trip on a sweet note at Mountain Creek Dining Room where they have mouthwatering tiramisu, molten chocolate cake and blueberry cheesecake on the menu.
