Tour the George Bird Evans Historic Home

The Old Hemlock Foundation will open the historic home of George Bird Evans and his wife, Kay Evans, to public tours. The 1782 deeded property is on the National Register of Historic Places. The log home was built in circa 1815. The tours will tell about lives of George and Kay. This tale of love of mountains, art, music, fine writing and English Setters will share George as an artist, author of mysteries and upland hunting, and breeder of the Old Hemlock Line of English Setters. There are approximately five miles of trails Old Hemlock. Visitors are welcome to use them just by dropping an email to lejay@oldhemlock.org so we know you are on the property. We have two public tours per year. All other visits are by appointment.

Bramwell’s Spring Tour of Historic Homes

Go back in time and visit the town of Millionaires with a self-guided walking tour featuring rows of Victorian homes built during the height of the West Virginia coal industry. The homes date back to the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Quaint brick streets line the way, with delightful stores and restaurants on Bramwell’s Main Street.

Heritage Day at Adaland

Crafts Demonstrations. Heritage Day at the Barn directs the spotlight on the restored barn where a varied collection of reproductions of equipment and tools owned by Augustus Modisett, builder of the mansion house, are displayed. The Modisett farm was settled in 1807 with the Modisett family living in a double log cabin on the property until the mansion house was built in 1872. A line up of guest demonstrators will share 1800 style heritage skills including the spindle, early farming skills, weaving and spinning, and dulcimer playing. The public is invited to bring their dulcimers and psaltries and play heritage music. Open to the public. Visitors may bring lunch to eat at the barn. Lunches will also be for sale. $10.00 each plus tip.

Country Fall Festival

West Virginia's State Farm Museum's Annual Country Fall Festival includes an Antique Gas Engine Show, CEO's Quilt Show, Antique Bottle Show and Antique Tractor Pull. Watch the making of apple butter, apple cider and sorghum. For sale. Tour over 30 buildings and cabins full of exhibits of a different time. Farm animals to pet. Sunday church service and gospel sing. Country Kitchen and Gift Shop open.

Penitentiary Photography Tour

Introducing West Virginia Penitentiary’s Photography Tour! This is not a guided tour, you will be roaming at your own pace and leisure. The gate will be opened approximately 15 minutes prior to the tour time for check-in. Each photographer is responsible for their own equipment, and is required to sign a waiver/agreement upon check-in. April – November the 3rd Monday of the month Hours: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Cost: $100 per person Requires a Photography License Agreement.

This is not a guided tour, you will be roaming at your own pace and leisure after a brief walk-through. The gate will be opened approximately 15 minutes prior to the tour time for check-in. Each photographer is responsible for their own equipment, and is required to sign a waiver/agreement upon check-in. June, July, and August you will be sharing the facility with tour groups. We ask that you refrain from blocking doors and pathways, and keep the floor clear of equipment that may cause a hazard to guests. During your photography tour, you will be allowed access to areas that are not accessible to the public on a regular basis. The areas that are available during a photography tour are as follows: (a map is available upon request) The Sugar Shack The Boiler Room The Infirmary The Psych Ward North and South recreation yards North Hall and New Wall (cell blocks) Visitation Kitchen and Cafeteria You do not have to be a professional photographer to take advantage of this opportunity. We welcome professionals, amateurs, artists, and everyone in between! You may bring drinks and snacks, NO ALCOHOL. Please pick up and dispose of your mess. There is no heat or air conditioning throughout our facility. The building will be extremely HOT in the summer and extremely COLD in the winter. Please dress according to the weather! House and Garden Tours

Be sure to visit "Homes on Tour" for a look at the beautiful historic homes open for viewing during the 62nd Annual House and Garden Tour. Docents from garden clubs throughout the region guide guests through these homes and gardens, describing the architecture, furnishings and plantings, as well as genealogical information or historical events that may have taken place on the grounds or within the walls. Club members also volunteer their time and talents by providing beautiful flower arrangements to decorate the homes. Tours are scheduled at the end of April in order to capture spring's beauty at its peak. West Virginia Botanic Garden Tree ID Walk

West Virginia University Society of American Foresters club members will help us identify and teach us about some of the trees found at the West Virginia Botanic Garden. Bring a tree ID guide if you have one. All ages are welcome. This event is free and open to the public. Please refrain from bringing your pet. Meet in the lower parking lot of the Botanic Garden.

West Virginia Botanic Garden Forest Understory Plants and Their Associated Canopy Species Walk

Research Botanist Cindy Huebner will lead a walk focusing on the identification of herbaceous plants and tree seedlings located in forest understories. We will also cover diversity and plant composition patterns found in particular forest types. This program is most appropriate for adults. It is free and open to the public Please refrain from bringing your pet. Meet in the lower parking lot of the Botanic Garden.

Holiday of Lights Festival – Bluefield

Drive through 40-plus acres of Christmas lights and celebrate the season underneath a candy cane canopy of lights. Various scenes, all created in Christmas lights, are spread throughout the city park. Weekend events include visits from Santa, walking tours and local choirs. The Holiday of Lights opens Thanksgiving evening and runs through December 31. Sunday-Thursday: 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Friday-Saturday: 6:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.
