St. Albans Founders Day

The 15th Annual St. Albans Founders Day will be held on Main Street, Saturday, September 18, 2021, from 10am –

C & D Bunner Family Spooky Yard Haunt

We are truly a Family Yard Haunt. We have 32 different themed rooms/areas, plus a maze to walk through. Kids Day: October 6 from 1pm - 5pm and October 21 from 1pm - 3pm. All Ages welcome. The kids may wear their costumes these days. We ask that no face masks be worn or anything else on their face please! We will have a face painter available free of charge. The kids get to walk through the Haunt and collect candy and treats. There are no tricks. We will have treat bags to give to the kids this day. The first 50 kids in Saturday and Sunday will receive a T-shirt. Fright Night: October 13 and 27 from 7:30pm - 11:00pm. Please remember this is for ages 12 and up ONLY. These two nights are much darker. All ages welcome, but could be scary for young children; Admission Free; Donations Welcome. Please park at Mt. Nebo Church and walk up or park along side the road were the rope lights are located. We are not handicap accessible.

Forest Pathogens

What are forest pathogens, how do they spread, and what impact do they have on forest health? Join Dr. Matt Kassen, WVU Assistant Professor of Plant Pathology, for an in-depth discussion followed by a walk to observe an example on-site at the WVBG. Insect Walk

Join Sue Olcott, West Virginia Division of Natural Resources wildlife diversity biologist, as we go in search of winged wonders. Learn to identify butterflies at the butterfly garden and watch for other jewels of the sky as we walk the reservoir trail. This walk is dependent upon warm dry weather. All ages. A look at why some plants are invasive, what is the result of their invading, and what can be done. Join George W. Friday Family Walk

Join WVBG Education Director Erin Smaldone on the first Friday of each month for a short story followed by a walk around the Garden concluding with a simple craft. This easy, casual walk is a great way for children and their caretakers to get outside and enjoy nature and the company of others. The trail will accommodate “off road” strollers. All ages. Free. Earth Day Walk

On the day before Earth Day, join Executive Director Bill Mills for a hike to some of his favorite places in the Garden. Starting at the Welcome Center, we will be crossing the board walk, and into the Rhododendron and Hemlock forest, ending with the Reservoir Loop. Water flow permitting, we may be crossing Tibbs Run. Superfoods: How to Choose Them and How to Use Them

March is National Nutrition Month. Join MaryAnn Post, CHC as she encourages you to take a holistic approach to your well-being. We will discuss “superfoods”—what they are and how they can help improve your general overall well-being. Several resources will be shared and some of the more common superfoods will be available for tasting. A short walk in the garden is included in this workshop. Christmas Open House with Santa’s Bake Shop at Adaland

Guests may walk through the house with no admission charge. Guests are offered a free cookie, a cup of coffee, or hot tea while they visit and are welcomed by twinkling lights, red velvet ribbons, garlands, and wreathes as well as Christmas trees in every room. HOMEMADE COOKIES TO ORDER: Santa’s Bake Shop features Christmas cookies baked for the occasion by Adaland Board member Jeannie Mozley. Ordered cookies by the dozen may be pick up. Gift Shop Open.

Spring Hill Cemetery Founders Day Program

A walking tour of Spring Hill Cemetery Park and Arboretum with re-enactors of some of Charleston's Founding Figures. The tour will showcase historic monuments with an optional guided history and tree tour. (Parking is limited. Arts Walk

This year’s ARTS WALK, sponsored by Greater Morgantown Convention and Visitors Bureau, Main Street Morgantown, Monongalia Arts Center (MAC) and Arts Monongahela, will take place on Friday, September 22 in downtown Morgantown. Arts Mon, MAC and Appalachian Gallery are information points for the Arts Walk– you can get the inside scoop on where the artists are and what’s happening downtown. Arts Mon is located next to Huntington Bank on the corner of High Street and Pleasant Street. Monongalia Arts Center is easy to find, on the corner of High Street and Kirk Street and Appalachian Galley in on Walnut Street across for the parking garage. Native Orchids Tour

Guest speaker Charles Garrett will give a photo presentation and talk on native orchids. Followed by a trip to the Cranberry Glades and surrounding area to look at various orchids. Bring a lunch, notepad, and camera. Be prepared for rain and be out all day.

Gardens for Wildlife Walk & Scavenger Hunt

Learn how the gardens and native plants at WVBG attract and support a host of wildlife, including birds, butterflies, moths, hummingbirds, and various beneficial insects. Join WVBG Outdoor Educator Stacy Clovis-Woofter for a fun info session, garden walk with focus on native plants, and curious kids’ scavenger hunt. Walk open to all ages. Free.

Beginners Guide to Plant Identification

On this walk with Research Botanist Cindy Huebner, participants will be introduced to the basics of plant identification and learn to identify several plant species with a focus on trees and shrubs. The walk will be followed by a short slide presentation reviewing what was seen in the field. Most appropriate for adults and older children. Free. Chocolate Fest & Book Faire

From cupcakes to truffles, local and regional authors and chocolate-themed activities, visitors won't find a more decadent or enjoyable festival than the Chocolate Festival and Book Faire April 23, hosted by Main Street Martinsburg. Local businesses throughout downtown host authors for book signings and discussions, as well as display chocolate-themed specials. Guests can also tour a local chocolate shop, sample cupcakes from a cupcake competition and watch "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" throughout this day-long adventure.

Ghost Adventures

Want to see what it is REALLY like to spend the night in prison – but with no living residents? Enjoy an informative 90-minute guided tour, and then roam the halls on your own. Hours: 11 p.m. – 6 a.m. Admission: $65/person ages 18 and older.

Penitentiary Photography Tour

$100/person Photography License Agreement available Introducing West Virginia Penitentiary’s Photography Tour! This is not a guided tour, you will be roaming at your own pace and leisure after a brief walk-through. The gate will be opened approximately 15 minutes prior to the tour time for check-in. Each photographer is responsible for their own equipment, and is required to sign a waiver/agreement upon check-in. June, July, and August you will be sharing the facility with tour groups. We ask that you refrain from blocking doors and pathways, and keep the floor clear of equipment that may cause a hazard to guests. During your photography tour, you will be allowed access to areas that are not accessible to the public on a regular basis. The areas that are available during a photography tour are as follows: (a map is available upon request) The Sugar Shack The Boiler Room The Infirmary The Psych Ward North and South recreation yards North Hall and New Wall (cell blocks) Visitation Kitchen and Cafeteria You do not have to be a professional photographer to take advantage of this opportunity. We welcome professionals, amateurs, artists, and everyone in between! You may bring drinks and snacks, NO ALCOHOL. Please pick up and dispose of your mess. There is no heat or air conditioning throughout our facility. The building will be extremely HOT in the summer and extremely COLD in the winter. Please dress according to the weather! West Virginia Botanic Garden Outlander Medicinal Plant Walk

Outlander book fans, this is for you! Claire Randall, a combat nurse from 1945 steps through some mysterious stones and is swept back in time to 1743. Join Kay Jones for a walk through the Garden in search of some of the plants Claire found and learn how she used them to practice her medical profession some 200 years in the past. All ages are welcome. This event is free and open to the public. Please refrain from bringing your pet. Meet in the lower parking lot of the Botanic Garden.
