Augusta Folk Arts for Kids “Augusta Explorers”

Augusta Folk Arts for Kids “Augusta Explorers” will take place from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. July 31-Aug. 4 on the Davis & Elkins College campus. Artist Emily Prentice will instruct the class focusing on Appalachian culture and the great outdoors. Class activities will include nature walks, plant identification, weaving, party games, ghost stories, square dancing, printmaking, singing and much more. Augusta Explorers will earn merit badges as they take in all that Augusta has to offer. Registration is open at www.augustaheritagecenter.org. The Music and the Mountains Old Time Festival

The Music and the Mountains Old Time Festival will showcase and celebrate Appalachian culture and craft. This community based, family friendly event will bring together local artisans and musicians to provide an opportunity for our local community and visitors to experience Appalachian craft demonstrations, old time music and dance traditions along with regional food. Friday night's concert will feature old time, traditional Appalachian music. Saturday afternoon events will include: local craft demonstrations, a display of regional archival photographs, old time children's games and activities, an open old time community jam, a cornbread contest and a soup bean dinner. Saturday night will offer beginner square dance lessons and a square dance bard and caller.

FOOTMAD Contra Dance

Contra dancing is like square dancing in long lines. Each dance is taught before the music begins. Also includes round dances, waltzes and squares. Fun for the whole family, for couples or singles -- no need to bring a partner. Free admission for new dancers, AmeriCorps members, and children under 13.

Augusta Dance

The Mountain Dance Trail, a heritage tourism project of the Augusta Heritage Center of Davis & Elkins College, will host its monthly square dance on Friday, February 10, in Myles Center for the Arts Pit Dance Studio on the College campus. The event will feature music by Gerry Milnes and friends, with Mary Alice Milnes calling square dances. A beginners’ workshop is set for 7:45 p.m. and the dance starts at 8 p.m. All dances are beginner and family friendly and participants don’t need to come with a dance partner. Admission is $6 for general public, $4 for students and AmeriCorps members, and free to Davis & Elkins College students, faculty and staff. An old-time square dance, sponsored by the Augusta Heritage Center of Davis & Elkins College and The Mountain Dance Trail, will take place at 8 p.m. Friday, September 9 in the Augusta Dance Pavilion on the campus of Davis & Elkins College. A dance workshop will precede the dance at 6:45 p.m. The evening will feature music by the Modock Rounders from Point Pleasant, W.Va., with Jesse Pearson on fiddle, Cody Jordan on guitar and Kim Johnson on banjo. Square dance calling will be by Ellen and Eugene Ratcliffe of Monterey, Va. Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for students and AmeriCorps members, and free to Davis & Elkins students, faculty and staff. Participants don’t have to come with dance a partner and listeners are welcome. Ceili and Square Dance

Ceili and Square Dance, presented by the Augusta Heritage Center of Davis & Elkins College, will take place at 8 p.m. Sunday, July 24 in the Augusta Dance Pavilion. Dave Bing, Andrew Dunlap and Mark Payne will provide old-time tunes and Bill McComiskey, Joey Albarta and Nathan Gourley will provide Irish tunes. Heritage Days

Heritage Days is a two day event celebrating the rich central West Virginia culture and history. The event features a Civil War Reenactment in the City of Spencer, encampments at Spencer Civil War Park, square dancing, old-time music, seminars on old time traditional cooking, quilting, presentations by General Stonewall Jackson, museums, and much more.

Mercer County Heritage Festival

Step into the past and relive the days of Appalachian History. The Heritage Festival features Civil War storytellers, farm animals, re-enactors such as Gen. Robert E. Lee and wife, Abraham Lincoln and wife, Booker T. Washington, Mark Twain, Ostenaco (Cherokee Warrior), craftsmen, vendors, food, Native American presenters , African American presenters, blacksmithing, spinning wheel, weaving, crafts, barn dance, railroad and coal mining displays, Appalachian music, flatfooting, Ladie's tea, and much more! Friday is educational day for schools. Veteran's commemoration on Saturday and Sunday with door prizes for veterans. Civil War Era church service on Sunday morning. Small admission fee.
