Shakespeare’s Weird Weather

From the “weird” meteors of Macbeth to the rain that “raineth every day” in Twelfth Night, this presentation chases the weather of early modern England. By exploring the climate in Shakespeare’s plays, as well as the climate in which his works were composed, this talk by Associate Professor of English at West Virginia University Lowell Duckert invites us to critically re-examine the entangled relationships between climate and culture in our current era of climate change. Migos

Annual Christmas Light Up and Community Christmas Parade

On December 1, 2017, join us for the annual Christmas Light Up activities: Christmas tree lighting at 6:30 p.m. on the garden plaza of the International Mother's Day Shrine, followed by Christmas caroling inside the National Historic Landmark structure where Mother's Day began. Caroling will be followed by a reception in the downstairs lecture room. Come back on Saturday, Dec. 2 for the annual Community Christmas Parade and Gigantic Toy Giveaway in downtown Grafton. Look to the Sky Movie Premiere Event

This is a special viewing of the upcoming Netflix documentary, Look to the Sky. This heartwarming film features uplifting stories of young people who have demonstrated the iconic spirit of Superman by becoming real-life superheroes when facing life-threatening situations, homelessness, physical challenges and loss. Tour the Historic Home of George Bird Evans

The Old Hemlock Foundation will open the historic home of George Bird Evans and his wife, Kay Evans, to public tours. The 1782 deeded property is on the National Register of Historic Places. The log home was built in circa 1815. The tours will tell about lives of George and Kay. This tale of love of mountains, art, music, fine writing and English Setters will share about George as an artist, author of mysteries and upland hunting, and breeding the Old Hemlock Line of English Setters. We have two public tours per year. All other visits are by appointment. There are approximately three miles of trails Old Hemlock. Visitors are welcome to use them just by dropping an email to lejay@oldhemlock.org so we know you are on the property.

40th Anniversary of the West Virginia Division of Culture and History

The West Virginia Division of Culture and History will celebrate 40 years with special activities for the whole family. Cake and cupcakes will be served at noon. Forty limited edition Blenko glass pieces will be on sale, along with arts and crafts activities for children, an in depth look into the different sections of the division and the amazing work the agency does around the Mountain State and behind-the-scenes tours of the State Museum collection featuring over 60,000 artifacts and the State Archives collection. A new WWI exhibit will also be unveiled.

A Tour of the Night Sky

WVU Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy D.J. Pisano will be leading a tour of the night sky. The evening will start with a talk about some of the highlights in the night sky, including planets, star clusters, and galaxies as well as the origins of the Perseid meteor shower which peaks on August 12. This will be followed, weather permitting, with the opportunity to look at some of these objects through telescopes plus a guided tour of how to view the Perseid meteor shower. All ages. The West Virginia Hitchers

The original “Hitchers” was very guitar-centric with pedal steel and percussion layered on top. The new “WV Hitchers” is a more authentic Folk-Americana sound, relying on the powerful songwriting and smooth vocals of Maria that melds with the strength of the lead guitar position, now occupied by Chuck on his pedal steel. Dan and Creed fill out the mix with Dan’s subtle and steady percussion as well as Creed’s tastefully rich bass lines. Tickets $5, kids 6 and under get in free.

Weary Space Wanderer

Weary Space Wanderer is spreading improvisational, Appalachian-jam over the made-from-scratch material of singer-songwriter Kevin Hamric. Taking the stories built on an acoustic guitar and shaping them into mind-bending trips of Americana and roots-rock exploration, Weary Space Wanderer is nothing short of an eclectic ride into what modern mountain music can be. Western Ave String Band

“Western Ave.” plays a huge variety of genres from Old time traditional Bluegrass, Fiddle tunes (some even jamming into the Grateful Dead) plus a large number of original tunes written and arranged specifically for our group. They focus on dynamic leads, three part harmonies (especially in the bluegrass numbers) and are seasoned veteran musicians. Tickets are $5, kids 6 and under get in free.

The Plate Scrapers

As classic as cast iron, as space-age as a flying car — The Plate Scrapers are serving up their own flavor of bluegrass by way of a winding wormhole through folk, jazz, and heavy metal dimensions. So grab yourself a thick slice of nostalgia, slap on a side of mind-bending originality, and top it off with some piping-hit pickin’, and let this hungry bunch “take you out of this atmosphere.” Tickets are $5, kids 6 and under get in free.

The Boatmen

The Boatmen are from the heart of West Virginia. With diverse instrumentation and the right blend of soaring harmony over top of Americana anthems, they have created a niche all their own. Into their third year and second album, the group has continually expanded its horizons through a non-stop tour schedule and constant support from their close knit fanbase. Come out to see this group which is easily viewed as bluegrass, rock-grass or a new-grass outfit; The Boatmen fall better into Americana Soulgrass. Jesse Shepherd and Friends

Join us as we celebrate our 80th year of service to the local community! Established in 1937 as a kids camp, come back to recreate past camp lessons, and exchange stories of happenings long ago. Mr. Jesse Shepherd will be wrapping up the evening with a show from 5:30-7:30p with bluegrass music, camp stories, and camp songs.

Halftime String Band

The Halftime boys have entertained audiences from coast to coast with their unique blend of acoustic Americana music. Often described as “jam grass”, the band, while having a strong bluegrass influence, does not include the standard elements of a traditional bluegrass band. (There is no banjo or fiddle in the group), and the song selection covers a wide array of musical styles. In addition to an eclectic song selection, the band also performs a number of original compositions. Halftime String Band consists of: Jason Jaros (guitar and vocals), Fred Crozier (mandolin and vocals) and Bob Spangler (upright bass and vocals). A “Halftime” show brings audiences to their feet and puts smiles on their faces. Tickets are $5, kids 6 and under get in free.

Free Concert with Jakob’s Ferry Stragglers

This free concert will be held at Krepp's Park at the upper pavilion. Hailing from the mountain towns of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Maryland, The Jakob’s Ferry Stragglers draw freely from Old-Time, Bluegrass, Rockabilly, and Swing music to create their own brand of high energy, Appalachian Bluegrass. As an offshoot of a former project, The Weedrags, JFS was formed by Gary Antol (Songwriter/Guitar/Vocals) and Libby Eddy (Fiddle/Vocals) in 2014 with a very simple goal: write good songs, have fun, and take it to the road. In the time since, JFS has appeared at festivals from New England to Florida and played club dates from the eastern seaboard to the west coast. In 2015, the band released their debut album, The Lane Change, a collection of both original and traditional songs focusing on journeys through personal relationships as well as life in the coal mining towns of central Appalachia. The album was well received by fans and critics alike. “Mannington #9,” a searing tale of lives lost in a 1968 mining disaster in Mannington, WV, was featured in the Relix Magazine 2015 Summer CD Sampler. Written by West Virginia storyteller and old-time musician, Keith McManus, the song’s driving rhythm and haunting melody capture the loss suffered by 78 families in this tragic accident. The Lane Change also featured the powerhouse harmonies of Antol and Eddy on titles such as “No Ash Will Burn” and “Blue Diamond Mines.”The Morgantown Board of Parks and Recreation (BOPARC) is committed to providing a quality system of parks, trails, facilities and programs that enhance our community and the well-being of our residents. Wycliffe Gordon & His International All Stars

Highly acclaimed trombonist Wycliffe Gordon can scat, multi-note, slide and plunge just like he stepped out of the 1930s. A son of the classical jazz era, he is best known for his work with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Wynton Marsalis. Gordon’s arrangements and compositions range in style from Louis Armstrong to hip-hop laced with Deep South jazz roots soul. His high-energy, traditional hard-swinging style captivates audiences whether he’s performing before dignitaries and heads-of-state or elementary school children. He has 50 recording (23 as co-leader) to his credit, as well as 14 citations as the world’s finest trombone player. One of America’s foremost music educators, he is currently on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music.

Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra

The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1896, has a long and distinguishes history celebrating some of the world’s finest conductors and musicians. The critically-acclaimed orchestra has toured extensively internationally, performing in Europe, the Far East and South America. Under the baton of guest conductor Krzysztof Urbanski, the PSO will perform “Shostakovich Triumphant,” which will include Beethoven’s “Overture to Egmont,” Bruch’s “Violin Concerto No.1” and Shostakovich’s “Symphony No.5.” Urbanski is in his sixth season as the music director of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Critically-acclaimed violinist Ray Chen will be featured. Chen is the winner of Queen Elisabeth (2009) and Yehudi Menuhin (2008) Competitions.

WVU Jazz Band and World Music Ensemble

Always…Patsy Cline

Always…Patsy Cline shares a story of respect, support, friendship, and talent that goes beyond what most fans get to experience with their idols. A musical by Ted Swindley Production of West Virginia Public Theatre, it focuses on Louise Seger’s fond memories of Cline and her love of her friend’s music.

Beech Bark Disease: A Long Established Forest Disease in West Virginia Reaches Monongalia County

Beech bark disease was first reported in WV in the early 1980s and has since spread throughout the higher elevations in eastern part of the state. In April 2016, BBD was discovered for the first time at the West Virginia Botanic Garden. During this presentation, Dr. Matt Kasson, WVU Assistant Professor of Plant Pathology, will discuss the history of the disease and potential factors influencing its progression. Full Moon Walk

Enjoy a walk at the Botanic Garden at night under the light of a full moon with WVBG Executive Director Bill Mills. The walk will be on the gravel Reservoir Loop trail and will last about an hour. We will be observing the sky and listening for the sounds of the nocturnal world. Bring a flashlight. All ages.
