Beginning Craft Workshops

Several workshops geared for beginners are available near Ripley. Learn fiber stools with Dallas Skeen, dulcimer with Martha Turley, wool felting with Debbie Martzel, photography with Ron Gaskins, blacksmithing with Cody Fields, and stained glass with Troy Knight.

October Craft Workshops

Watoga Art in the Park

Watoga Art in the Park – bringing together artists and the great outdoors. Watoga Art in the Park features a great fun- filled weekend for families set in one of West Virginia's most beautiful parks – Watoga State Park. The juried fine art and craft fair will feature some of the region's most impressive artists and craftspeople showcasing jewelry, pottery, fiber, glass, photography, painting and much more Find that perfect gift for a loved one or yourself. Along with showcasing fine art for purchase, there will be eight professional artists, instructing in 22 workshops throughout the two-day event to help you create your own work of art. Learn pastels, watercolors, or acrylics from accomplished artists, watch and participate in wood-fire pottery or blacksmithing, make your own mask and paint or decorate it, check out white oak basketry, as well as yoga and art therapy. Join in one or all three nature walks lead by a Watoga State Park Naturalist. Learn about birds and then return to paint what you observed, make a clay dish using some of the natural materials you'll find along your walk, or check out the hike where you learn to identify animal footprints. In the evening you can participate in an Owl Prowl and the even make owl houses to take home with you. There will be great music both days as well as a variety of foods. Kids Corner open all day. Green Bank Star Quest

Our 14th annual OPTICAL and RADIO astronomy "Star Party" July 19th - 22th, 2017 held at the Green Bank Observatory, Green Bank WV. We will have a distinguished keynote speakers EVERY evening, with presentations on the latest in optical &; radio astronomy. We will have a featured prominent speaker for the "Keynote Presentation" Saturday evening. Clinics and additional presentations held daily (indoors) on multiple subjects including Astrophotography. Solar and night-time observing at your campsite. Campground has graveled roads, sanitary stations and a HOT shower facility (close by). We Feature: a Large Raffle Drawing (the 2016 event had 84 prizes), Children's Activities, Cafeteria and Snack Bar, and Vendors on site. The 4-day registration fee is just $100. Limited bunkhouse accommodations for additional fee.

Penitentiary Photography Tour

Introducing West Virginia Penitentiary’s Photography Tour! This is not a guided tour, you will be roaming at your own pace and leisure. The gate will be opened approximately 15 minutes prior to the tour time for check-in. Each photographer is responsible for their own equipment, and is required to sign a waiver/agreement upon check-in. April – November the 3rd Monday of the month Hours: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Cost: $100 per person Requires a Photography License Agreement.

Capital City Art and Craft Show

Nearly 160 creative artisans display treasures from traditional to contemporary for sale including jewelry, pottery, photography, fine arts, stone and metal sculpture. For many customers it’s an annual ritual to spend a day here, seeing their favorite exhibitors and meeting new ones, buying new works including gifts for the approaching holiday season. The show will feature artisans from seven states. The Country Kitchen will be offering delicious fall favorites and vendors will provide specialty food items.

Each photographer is responsible for their own equipment, and is required to sign a waiver/agreement upon check-in. June, July, and August you will be sharing the facility with tour groups. We ask that you refrain from blocking doors and pathways, and keep the floor clear of equipment that may cause a hazard to guests. During your photography tour, you will be allowed access to areas that are not accessible to the public on a regular basis. The areas that are available during a photography tour are as follows: (a map is available upon request) The Sugar Shack The Boiler Room The Infirmary The Psych Ward North and South recreation yards North Hall and New Wall (cell blocks) Visitation Kitchen and Cafeteria You do not have to be a professional photographer to take advantage of this opportunity. We welcome professionals, amateurs, artists, and everyone in between! You may bring drinks and snacks, NO ALCOHOL. Please pick up and dispose of your mess. There is no heat or air conditioning throughout our facility. The building will be extremely HOT in the summer and extremely COLD in the winter. Please dress according to the weather! The market aids in economic development by encouraging entrepreneurialism and tourism, and it contributes to the East End’s ongoing revitalization as a thriving, vibrant arts district.

West Virginia Botanic Garden Nature Photography Workshop

July 9, 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Local photographer Dave Smaldone will teach participants how to use simple settings on their digital cameras (no smartphones, please), give compositional tips, and encourage seeing creatively in a variety of natural settings. Beginner and intermediate photographers are welcome. Please refrain from bringing your pet. Meet in the lower parking lot of the Botanic Garden.
