Select weekends are set aside for boy scout troops to visit the Green Bank Observatory and complete activities to earn their astronomy merit badge. Scouts and Chaperones stay in our affordable bunkhouse ($10/person/night, $200/night minimum). Camping is also available in a designated area on the campus ($5/person/night, $150/night minimum). Telescope Tours will be available as well as rare peeks into the control room of the world's largest fully-steerable telescope, the GBT!

Scouts and Chaperones stay in our affordable bunkhouse ($10/person/night, $200/night minimum). Camping is also available in a designated area on the campus ($5/person/night, $150/night minimum). Meals are available in our cafeteria. See: Most designated weekends are devoted to the Astronomy Merit badge. There is no charge for the Astronomy program. In 2017, we will host one weekend. As we will be soldering electronic kits as part of the program, there is a $5.00/scout charge to cover the cost of the materials. Our Electronics Badge weekend will be September 15-17, 2017 We begin activities promptly at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, but offer the bunkhouse on Friday night for groups who have a far distance to travel. Space is limited.

Space Race Rumpus

It's a festival. It's a race. It's group rides. It's a clinic. It's a tradition. The Space Race Rumpus takes place every June in Pocahontas County, WV, which has some of the most scenic roads and trails in the mid-Atlantic. The rides and races explore both the National Radio Astronomy Observatory's unique property and the surrounding area.
