John Ellison, Live at ACE Adventure Resort
International legend John Ellison, singer songwriter of the classic hit "(She's) Some Kind of Wonderful" is bringing it to the table at ACE Adventure Resort with his all natural, low sodium, no MSG and gluten free gourmet blend of seasonings. Ellison is scheduled to perform on the deck of The Lost Paddle at ACE, Saturday, July 7th at 8:00 pm to celebrate the holiday weekend and announce a partnership between ACE and Ellison's Some Kind of Wonderful Gourmet Seasoning. The show is free, family friendly and open to the public. Ellison, born in a shack built from driftwood on the bank of the Kanawha River in Fayette County and raised in the coalfields of southern West Virginia, pursued his musical dreams and became the songwriter of one of the most recorded and played songs in music history: "(She's) Some Kind of Wonderful" was released in 1967 and gained notoriety with its catchy tune and lyrics. Today Ellison continues to perform on stages around the world bringing people together with music, and now around the dinner table. In 2001, John started Some Kind of Wonderful Foods to produce his own recipes and gourmet seasoning. The seasoning is his own blend, all natural, gluten free, no MSG and low sodium. ACE's kitchen uses Ellison's gourmet seasonings on all their wings as well as a few other food items on The Lost Paddle menu. Try the sauceless wings - they are Some Kind of Wonderful. Ellison's soulful funk performance will be followed by the local folk pop rock band The Parachute Brigade.
Friends of Music Concert featuring Two Rivers String Quartet
The Friends of Music will launch their new concert season on September 23 with a performance by the Two Rivers String Quartet and a featured clarinet. The concert will be held in Shepherdstown's Trinity Episcopal Church, on German Street, at 7:30 p.m. The program will include two works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, his Quartet No. 21 in D Major and his Clarinet Quintet in A Major; and "Bagatelles for Clarinet and Strings"(Op. 23), by 20th Century British composer Gerald Finzi. Admission to the concert will be free for Friends of Music members. The ticket price for others will be $20 per person ($18 before September 10). This year's concert season is supported in part by a grant from the WV Division of Culture and History and the National Endowment for the Arts, with approval from the WV Commission on the Arts. The featured clarinetist for the September 23 concert will be David Drosinos. Mr. Drosinos has performed in Greece, Ireland, Moscow, Finland, the Bahamas and all over the continental U.S. He teaches at The Baltimore School for the Arts, The Peabody Preparatory, and Shepherd University. The Two Rivers String Quartet includes the following musicians: Heather Austin-Stone, Violin. Ms. Austin-Stone is currently the Concertmaster of the Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra, the Assistant Concertmaster with the Maryland Symphony Orchestra, and a section 1st violinist with the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra. Camilo Perez-Mejia, Cello. Mr. Perez-Mejia is a member of the Temple Trio, Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra, Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Greater Washington, and principal cellist for the National String Symphonia. He is also the Music Director and Conductor of the Charles Washington Symphony. Dana Rokosny, Viola. Ms. Rokosny is principal violist of the Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra and performs regularly with the Maryland Symphony Orchestra and other orchestras in the Baltimore-Washington area. Petr Skopek, Violin. Mr. Skopek is a member of the Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra, the Maryland Symphony Orchestra, the Gettysburg Chamber Orchestra and the Shippensburg Festival Orchestra.
Outdoor Classical Music Concert
The Friends of Music will present the fifth and final concert of their current season at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, June 25 in Shepherdstown, WV. This will be a special outdoor concert, held under a tent with chairs on the front lawn of Shepherd University's Popodicon mansion on Shepherd Grade Road. The concert will feature the Two Rivers Brass Quintet playing a variety of spirited works appropriate for an early-summer day. The program will be as follows: • Eric Ewazen (b. 1954) — A Western Fanfare • Anonymous — Sonata from Die Bankelsangerlieder (c. 1684) • Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) — Selections from West Side Story, arr. by Jack Gale • John Cheetham (b. 1939) — Scherzo • J.S. Bach (1685-1750) — Contrapunctus IX from "The Art of Fugue," arr. by John Glasel • Victor Ewald (1860-1935) — Quintet No. 1 Admission will be free for Friends of Music members. Some parking will be available on the Popodicon grounds but concertgoers will mainly be encouraged to park in the southernmost end of Shepherd University's "H" parking lot, which is located directly behind Popodicon, off University Drive on the West Campus. From there, they can either walk a short distance to the mansion or take a shuttle bus that Friends of Music will provide. Buddy Guy
Buddy Guy is one of the most celebrated blues guitarists of his generation. For more than half a century, he has blended the genres of blues and rock and roll like no other performer. His early work at Chess Records where he could be found sitting in with Muddy Waters, and his early gigs in Chicago where he became famous for his fiery guitar work and flashy stage style led him to the pinnacle of the blues ‘n’ rock genre for which he is known. Guy has earned seven Grammy Awards—Best Blues Album (2015), Best Contemporary Blues Album (2010), Best Traditional Blues Album (2003), Best Contemporary Blues Album – or Contemporary Blues Recording (1991, 1993, 1995) and the Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award (2015). He has received the National Medal of the Arts as well as the Kennedy Center Honors and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005 where he was presented with his award by Eric Clapton and B.B. King. It’s no coincidence that Guy counts King among his influences along with T-Bone Walker and Otis “Lightin’ Slim” Hicks but he is also credited with influencing the careers of Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn.
