Telescope Tours will be available as well as rare peeks into the control room of the world's largest fully-steerable telescope, the GBT!
Boy Scout Electronics Badge Weekend
Select weekends are set aside for boy scout troops to visit the Green Bank Observatory and complete activities to earn their astronomy merit badge. Scouts and Chaperones stay in our affordable bunkhouse ($10/person/night, $200/night minimum). Camping is also available in a designated area on the campus ($5/person/night, $150/night minimum). Meals are available in our cafeteria. See: Most designated weekends are devoted to the Astronomy Merit badge. There is no charge for the Astronomy program. In 2017, we will host one weekend. As we will be soldering electronic kits as part of the program, there is a $5.00/scout charge to cover the cost of the materials. Our Electronics Badge weekend will be September 15-17, 2017 We begin activities promptly at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, but offer the bunkhouse on Friday night for groups who have a far distance to travel. Space is limited.
Green Bank Star Quest
Our 14th annual OPTICAL and RADIO astronomy "Star Party" July 19th - 22th, 2017 held at the Green Bank Observatory, Green Bank WV. We will have a distinguished keynote speakers EVERY evening, with presentations on the latest in optical &; radio astronomy. We will have a featured prominent speaker for the "Keynote Presentation" Saturday evening. Clinics and additional presentations held daily (indoors) on multiple subjects including Astrophotography. Solar and night-time observing at your campsite. Campground has graveled roads, sanitary stations and a HOT shower facility (close by). We Feature: a Large Raffle Drawing (the 2016 event had 84 prizes), Children's Activities, Cafeteria and Snack Bar, and Vendors on site. The 4-day registration fee is just $100. Limited bunkhouse accommodations for additional fee.
Space Race Rumpus
It's a festival. It's a race. It's group rides. It's a clinic. It's a tradition. The Space Race Rumpus takes place every June in Pocahontas County, WV, which has some of the most scenic roads and trails in the mid-Atlantic. The rides and races explore both the National Radio Astronomy Observatory's unique property and the surrounding area.
Fort Warwick Archaeology Days
The Fort Warwick Archaeology Days project will involve a hands-on archaeological experience, interpretive exhibits, and site tours for students and adult participants at the site of William Warwick’s Fort in Green Bank, Pocahontas County, West Virginia on May 27, 2017. This fort was constructed in 1774 and became an important point of local defense during the Revolutionary War. The site also has a significant prehistoric Native American component. Archaeological excavations supervised by Drs. Stephen and Kim McBride have been ongoing at this site for over a decade and this is your opportunity to assist us in better understanding this site and expanding knowledge of West Virginia’s early history. SETI Tours
Our new SETI Tour celebrates Green Bank’s historic Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence with this 3-hour tour. Participants begin with an exclusive presentation right in the control room of our historic 85-1 Telescope where the search began with Frank Drake’s OZMA Project. From there, guests enjoy a rare tour inside the 140-foot telescope control room where Jill Tartar’s Project Phoenix began and then to normally-restricted GBT access points. The tour ends in our Drake Lounge where you will be greeted by NRAO Staff and learn about the future of SETI as GBT embarks on the new Breakthrough Listen project. If you’ve ever wanted to be inside our operation control rooms or to speak to one of our radio astronomers in person, then this is THE opportunity of a lifetime! Advance reservations and screening strictly required at least 40 hours in advance. 20 participants max, 4 min.; Ages 12 & up. Hard hats and light refreshments provided.
