John Ellison, Live at ACE Adventure Resort

International legend John Ellison, singer songwriter of the classic hit "(She's) Some Kind of Wonderful" is bringing it to the table at ACE Adventure Resort with his all natural, low sodium, no MSG and gluten free gourmet blend of seasonings. Ellison is scheduled to perform on the deck of The Lost Paddle at ACE, Saturday, July 7th at 8:00 pm to celebrate the holiday weekend and announce a partnership between ACE and Ellison's Some Kind of Wonderful Gourmet Seasoning. Ellison, born in a shack built from driftwood on the bank of the Kanawha River in Fayette County and raised in the coalfields of southern West Virginia, pursued his musical dreams and became the songwriter of one of the most recorded and played songs in music history: "(She's) Some Kind of Wonderful" was released in 1967 and gained notoriety with its catchy tune and lyrics. Today Ellison continues to perform on stages around the world bringing people together with music, and now around the dinner table. Irish Road Bowling – Kanawha State Forest

Irish Road Bowling consists of a ball made of iron and steel that is heavy enough to pick up speed, yet small enough for any person to handle. Besides the basic rules and terms, all you do is hurl this 28 oz. sized "bowl" with an underhand motion over a 1 to 2 mile country road and see how far it goes! Scored like golf, the fewest number of shots from the start to the finish line wins. Irish Road Bowling is similar to fast pitch softball, except with a running start. It's also like bowling if you had enough room to run 10 or 15 yards. Irish Road Bowling is ideal for young athletes or seniors who are looking to enjoy a scenic walk on a country road, combined with an ancient and exciting, but not overly strenuous, sport! Located just seven miles south of Charleston, West Virginia, Kanawha State Forest is in close proximity to the heavily populated Kanawha Valley and is a recreational haven. The 9,300-acre forest is noted among naturalists for its diverse wildflower and bird populations. Rich cove forest sites provide nesting habitat for 19 species of wood warblers, a feature which draws birders from as far away as Canada. The forest offers some of West Virginia’s best special hikes in winter, spring and fall. Team Registration, 12:30 p.m. Saturday 1:30 pm: Bowling Begins. Contact Kanawha State Forest at 304-558-3500, email kanawhasf@wv.gov, or call Road Master Stephen Wallington 304-638-3224 for more information.

19th Annual Elizabethtown Festival

— The 19th annual Elizabethtown Festival is planned for Sept. 16 at the Moundsville Center, inside the walls of the former West Virginia Penitentiary. The festival celebrates the traditions and customs of the past with bread making, quilt displays, weaving, and many craft items for sale. In 1999, the Moundsville Economic Development Council (MEDC) sponsored the first Elizabethtown Festival celebrating the long-forgotten town Joseph Tomlinson, an Irish immigrant’s son, established in 1738 and named in honor of his wife, Elizabeth. Elizabethtown was the first settlement on the “Flats of Grave Creek” and the Tomlinson family built their dwelling near the site of the Moundsville Middle School. Elizabethtown merged with neighboring Moundsville to become one town in 1866 and on Feb. 23 of that year, the first city officials of the town were named with many family names still local to the area today. The Elizabethtown Festival, originally offered as an 1800s heritage festival, has grown to now include items from the past to the present. Demonstrations of historic trades, food and musical entertainment, along with a cookie and apple pie baking contest, “Anything BUT Chili Soup Contest” and historical memorabilia displays make this event perfect for the entire family. Admission is free! This year, organizers are collaborating with the Uptown Moundsville Activities Committee Fall Festival to hold a large one-day event with a car and motorcycle show. By joining together, the two groups will offer more unique shopping and demonstration opportunities, along with giving locals and travelers more reasons to visit the area. Time for the festival is 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16. For information or to become a vendor, contact: festival@wvpentours.com or 304-845-6200.
