WV Day Celebration
Honor West Virginia's Birthday on June 20, 2017 at the WV Wildlife Center! This year’s celebration will be “For the Birds”. The West Virginia Raptor Rehabilitation Center will be conducting an environmental education program at the Amphitheater. We’ll have educational activities and crafts for the kids designed to teach them how to protect the habitats for all birds. We’ll be serving birthday cake so come celebrate the birth of our state.

5th Annual Shepherdstown “DogFest”
Shepherdstown WV will hold its fifth annual "DogFest" the weekend of April 29-30. Originally held during August, the event has been shifted to the spring the past two years to get away from the summer heat. This year's DogFest will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. both days. It will include a wide variety of activities for dogs, their owners, dog lovers, and the general public. Most of the activities will be located on King Street, downtown. All the activities will be free and everyone will be welcome. One of the main events will be a Saturday parade of rescue dogs that will showcase adoptable dogs from different breed-specific rescue organizations and local all-breed shelters. As each dog goes on parade, a representative of the sponsoring organization will provide commentary on the animal. DogFest coordinator Marianne Davis says this parade format offers a good opportunity to educate the public about the needs of different breeds and adoption and fostering options. Other highlights of the weekend will include a community dog show on Sunday afternoon open to all dogs owned by both visitors and residents. Both days will include blessings of the dogs; exhibits and demonstrations by trainers, rescue organizations, and others; and children's activities. Throughout the weekend, many restaurants and stores will let dog owners bring their dogs inside. Many will also be offering special dog-themed food, drinks, and items for sale. Maple Sugaring Day at Oglebay
EVENT DETAILS Experience the history of maple syrup production at Oglebay Institute’s annual Maple Sugaring Day. Begin by learning techniques Native Americans and early pioneers used to gather and make maple syrup as you are guided from station to station along the trials. Modern methods of sap collection will also be demonstrated. Finish your tour with a hot pancake breakfast in the Camp Russel dining hall. The 40 minute tours depart every half hour beginning at 9 a.m. from Camp Russel in Oglebay. Last tour leaves at 12:30 p.m. Advance registration is encouraged. Lecture – “Hopewell Geometry, Astronomy, and the Marietta Earthworks”
By Wesley Clarke, MA, RPA - The Castle Museum in Marietta, OH. The earthworks at Marietta, Ohio, includes several unusual features, as well as astronomical alignments. While systematic examination of this site has been limited, research during the past 25 years has added substantially to the site record, pointing to future avenues of inquiry and explanation. Mr. Clarke is currently the resident archaeologist and Manager of Collections at The Castle Museum in Marietta, Ohio, where he is directing excavation of an early nineteenth century pottery production site on the museum grounds.

Freshwater Folk Festival
The Freshwater Folk Festival is a full day of splendid music, tasty food, local crafts and fun hands-on educational activities built around the Festival mission which -- to promote understanding, appreciation and conservation of freshwater resources and to celebrate the local natural history and culture of White Sulphur Springs and Greenbrier County.
Flintknapping Demonstration
A flintknapping demonstration, led by archaeologist Richie Rosencrance, will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 11 in The Stirrup Gallery in Myles Center for the Arts on the campus of Davis & Elkins College. Flintknapping is the production of stone tools most commonly known as arrowheads. The demonstration will include a discussion on raw materials, knapping tools and techniques, types of stone tools and prehistoric lifeways. Anyone who has artifacts they would like to learn more about is encouraged to bring the items to the session for Rosencrance to examine. There is no fee to attend. Annual Phipps Lecture at Davis & Elkins College
The annual Phipps Lecture at Davis & Elkins College will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, November 3 in The Joni and Buck Smith Arts Forum in Myles Center for the Arts. The Rev. Dr. Miguel A. De La Torre, professor of social ethics and Latinx studies at Iliff School of Theology in Denver, Colo., an award-winning author and scholar activist, will present the talk titled "Why They Come: Understanding the U.S. Immigration Crises." The lecture is free and open to the public. Time will be allotted for questions from the audience and a reception will take place afterward. In addition to the lecture, De La Torre will show a documentary, “Trails of Hope and Terror,” made by him and his son, Vincent De La Torre. The screening will take place at 11 a.m. November 3 in Eshleman Science Center 400. There is no admission fee and a discussion will follow.
