Start 2024 Off Strong With These 4 West Virginia Adventures

In West Virginia, New Year means new adventures! Whether you have written your New Year’s resolutions in stone or you’re just going with the flow, the Mountain State has plenty of opportunities to get you and your family in the Almost Heaven spirit.

Let 2024 be your year to grow closer to the Mountain State and discover these four thrilling adventures this season.

Snowy Sled Run

Davis, West Virginia

Home to the longest sled run found on the East Coast, Blackwater Falls State Park in Davis is where hills and thrills make the best memories! Blaze down a steep quarter-mile-long slope, and you can easily return to the top by taking the “wonder carpet,” which only takes about five minutes to get you back to the peak.

While you’re here, be sure to capture your #AlmostHeaven swing selfie by the majestic Blackwater Falls, which is also a part of the West Virginia Waterfall Trail.

Snow Sports at Canaan Valley Resort

Davis, West Virginia

Canaan Valley Resort State Park boasts surreal beauty and top-tier slopes for skiing, snowboarding and tubing. Explore nearly fifty trails and enjoy hitting the slopes – no matter how experienced you are. Extend your stay by booking one of the lodge’s 160 rooms or 23 cabins for a cozy place to warm up. For dinner, you can make the short drive to the heart of Davis and enjoy some West Virginia-inspired burritos at Hellbender Burritos.

Just a 20-minute drive away is the town of Thomas, which has a stretch of local shops and The Purple Fiddle along the North Fork Blackwater River. A trip to Tucker County will make you fall in love with the serene wildness and small-town feels.

Endless Wall Trail

New River Gorge National Park and Preserve

The three-mile Endless Wall Trail is a scenic loop that winds through thick forests and reveals a stunning view of the New River and the New River Gorge Bridge. Catch this trail on a snowy day, and you will get a good look at the beautiful snow-covered New River Gorge National Park and Preserve mountains.

This puts you within reach of the charming town of Fayetteville, which is home to Cathedral Cafe, an old church-turned-cafe on the West Virginia Culinary Trail. Shop for West Virginia-themed gear to keep you warm at Lost Appalachia Trading Co. or purchase antiques and furniture at the Hobbit Hole.

Off-Road Adventures

Hatfield-McCoy Trail System

With more than 1,000 to explore, the Hatfield-McCoy Trail System is a paradise for ATV and off-road lovers to explore southern West Virginia at a deeper level. Cruise through the snow-covered rolling hills and get a feel for taking the paths less traveled. There are snowmobile-friendly trails as well.

You can also take advantage of the ATV-friendly businesses near the trails, such as the Blue Goose Inn by the Buffalo Mountain Trailhead and Morrison’s Drive Inn in Logan.
