The staple of Seneca Rocks is the iconic hiking trails. The Seneca Rocks Trailhead starts a challenging, but rewarding trail that twists and turns up the mountain. Spanning 3.7 miles roundtrip, you’ll be met with lush nature, lively scenery, and breathtaking views. The view from the top is worth the trek every time.
Looking to make a more thrilling adventure? Try rock climbing on the trails. On the same trail, there are over 350 multi-pitch routes ranging from 5.0 and 5.14. Take on classic routes such as the Skyline Traverse (5.2) and Roy Gap Chimneys (5.6) in a traditional climbing style. While more challenging, the views of the valley below will take your breath away.
Swimming
In late summer, the sun gets hot and teh nearby water is the perfect relief. The North Forks of the South Branch of the Potomac River run through the mountains, giving a great natural swimming spot for a hot summer day. Located along the river, a swimming spot known as Triangle Rock provides a stunning spot with rock formations all around.
Cave Exploration
After rising above the trees, take the descent into the depths of Seneca Caverns. The caverns provide a well-lit, accessible adventure. Journey over a mile into the earth to explore stunning otherworldly formations.
Smoke Hole Caverns is another popular exploration spot, used previously as a meat-smoking cave for locals. Regardless of where you go, it’s always important to be prepared. The temperature is a constant mid 50’s all year round, so a light jacket and closed toes shoes will allow you to enjoy every second.
Shopping
After your exploring, it’s important to leave with a souvenir and a full stomach. Harper’s Country Store is able to fulfill both of those needs. The bottom floor serves as a country store with snacks, drinks and camping needs. The top floor is an iconic pizza restaurant with breathtaking view of Seneca Rocks.
Across the street is Yokum’s, which is packed with general goods and one of West Virginia’s most beloved hot dogs. These two local spots are the perfect places to refuel after a day in the mountains.
