Life is short, make it sweet! At least that’s what the folks at Hanging Rocks Ice Cream believe. Located right outside of the town of Romney, you’ll have no trouble finding an option to satisfy your sweet tooth here. However, the countless options including hand-dipped cones, real-fruit shakes, snow cones, sundaes and even ice cream pies will make it hard to decide. Top it off with a family game of jumbo checkers or corn hole under the willow tree.
Dairy Creme Corner
Fairmont, WV
Dairy Creme Corner has been a shining star in the town of Fairmont since 1987 and continues to serve a growing crowd. Best known for serving toppling high cones, this shop shows no sign of portion control. The Avalanche is another heaping favorite found here which consists of creamy ice cream mixed with your choice of over 40 mix-ins. The big servings keep on coming with the food choices of hoagies, hotdogs, salads, funnel cakes and more.
Crafts of the Coal
St. Albans, WV
Originally established as a traveling ice cream trailer, Crafts of the Coal now has a permanent store-front on Olde Maine in the city of St. Albans. Specializing in premium hand-dipped ice cream, you can get your fix in a cup, cone, shake or pint to go. This shop spices it up with unique flavors in honor of the Mountain State, such as “Coal Mud Mocha”, “Country Roads Cookie Jar” and “WV Pothole”.
Austin’s Homemade Ice Cream
Ceredo, WV
Homemade ice cream made from all-natural flavorings and personal recipes can be found at Austin’s Homemade Ice Cream shop in the small town of Ceredo. In fact, the shop celebrates its 75th anniversary this season! Flavors range from tried and true favorites like mint chip to innovative flavors like grape-pineapple. This shop consistently offers exciting specials and events, celebrating holidays such as National Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day.
Dancing Dog Ice Cream Cafe
Charleston, WV
Opening in September of 2021, Dancing Dog Ice Cream Café, offers visitors another tasty ice cream option in the state’s capitol city. At any given time they have dozens of super premium grade ice cream flavors. They include both the classics and creative ones such as key lime pie or lemon chiffon. The ice cream is handmade on site in small batches along with their food specials that can vary from smashed burgers and pepperoni rolls to broccoli cheddar soup.
The Frozen Barn
Oak Hill, WV
The Frozen Barn is another new addition to the West Virginia ice cream scene. This ice cream parlor has quickly become a fan favorite of both locals and visitors of the nearby New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. Despite being open for less than a year at the time, it was voted as the Best Ice Cream Shop in West Virginia in WVliving magazine in 2021 for their selection of old fashioned hand dipped ice cream flavors.

Nebo, WV
Pizzas and Cream offers an incredibly unique dining experience whether you stop for the woodfired pizza or freshly made ice cream. The food is take out only, but the family that operates the restaurant invites patrons to enjoy their specialty frozen desserts on outdoor seating on their farm which is where the restaurant is located. Savor your pizza, ice cream, Italian ice or gelato while taking in the beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.
What’s the Scoop
Point Pleasant, WV
If you’re looking for over the top, Instagram worthy ice cream dishes, What’s the Scoop is the place for you. They have a large menu sure to please every ice cream lover’s palate, but they are famous for their creatively themed and photogenic milkshakes such as the “bigfoot” that features caramel ice cream topped with peanuts, pretzels and two full Snickers candy bars. If their “mothman” milkshake leaves you hungry to learn more about the local cryptid, the Mothman Museum is only a few hundred feet away on Main Street, Point Pleasant.
