As fall slowly turns to winter, West Virginia turns its eye toward holiday events and activities. Mark down these must-see events this month to experience November fun in Almost Heaven.

Hike through state parks

Hike Across WV: Fall Edition, Nov. 2

Join the park naturalist Valerie Chaney for a beautiful fall hike featuring two stunning views: Cacapon Mountain & Prospect Peak. The 12-mile hike is fairly easy walking across the mountain ridge on a fire road with a gradual decline. Visitors will be shuttled from Nature Center at 8:30 a.m. and return by shuttle. Allow 5-6 hours of time that includes the hike and shuttle. Bring water, bug spray & sturdy shoes. Registration is required in advance for this fall hike, as seats are limited. Elf, Jr., Nov. 29, 30, Dec. 6, 7, 13 and 14 at 7 p.m., and Dec. 1, 8, and 15 at 2 p.m.

The Aracoma Story, Inc. is presenting Elf, Jr. at the Coalfield Jamboree in downtown Logan. Based on the 2003 film, Elf, Jr., centers around Buddy, a young orphan, who mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported to the North Pole. Eventually, with Santa’s permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York to find his birth father and discover his true identity.

Cruise a nationally renowned lights display

Oglebay Festival of Lights, Nov. 9 – Feb. 1

If you’re antsy to get into the Christmas spirit, one of the nation’s largest light shows opens mid-November. At Oglebay Resort in Wheeling, ooh and aah at more than 300 acres of twinkling lights on your 6-mile cruise through the beautiful resort. Enjoy more than 85 larger-than-life scenes popping out of the rolling hills in spectacular color. The animals at the adjacent Good Zoo wanted in on the Christmas fun, too. They deck the place out with a dazzling light show, with more than 35,000 LED lights pulsing to the sounds of holiday music.
