New Event for the Mountain State: Fling at the Springs

Written by Capon Springs & Farms Co-Owner, Jonathan Bellingham

World League FlingGolf comes to Capon Springs April 28-30

As a natural explorer, my love for travel has taken me through much of Western and Eastern Europe (before and after the fall of the Berlin wall), Mexico and other parts of Central and South America. But recently, I relearned the valuable lesson from Dorothy that sometimes there really is no place like home. This has been emphasized as I have become a pioneering ambassador for a new sport no one has heard of. You see, most folks know about disc golf, some folks know about foot golf but it is a rare individual that has any idea about my favorite kind… FlingGolf!  And I’m not surprised since even when I introduced it to Capon Springs & Farm’s home course in 2016, it was only permitted to be attempted on our small par 3 prep course. The idea of people taking a golf ball and flinging it lacrosse-style seemed too wild and dangerous to the traditional golfer. Now, that tune has changed as this family-friendly, easy-to-learn version of golf has captured the imagination of many a golfer.

Why FlingGolf?

The sport got a big boost in 2021 when New Swarm, the company behind FlingGolf, appeared on Shark Tank. That led to the launch of a World League FlingGolf (WLF) tourney in May 2022. ESPN2 took note and showed up at the event to capture the magic. (For the inaugural May event, I appear in full fling near the end of the 60-second introductory montage.) It was then that I saw the potential for Capon Springs to bring New Swarm to WV by hosting a family-friendly weekend on our course to showcase our slice of Almost Heaven and introduce others to the sport I have enjoyed for over six years now.

Plan Your FlingGolf Getaway

That dream will come true April 28-30, 2023, when New Swarm/WLF brings its national brand to our little corner of West Virginia with the Potomac Highlands Regional tourney. This weekend package will allow everyone to participate or spectate. With limited slots for the premier tourney on Saturday, first-come, first-serve booking is open now. Additionally, the top FlingGolf players in the nation have committed to competing and leading a panel, Q&A and clinics. I can’t wait to introduce my FlingGolf community to the wild, wonderful hospitality of West Virginians.

Extend Your Stay

Within a scenic 30-minute drive, guests can explore a few other Hampshire County, WV delights, including the thriving arts community at The River House, the best darn burger at the award-winning butchery and store, Farmer’s Daughter and the best selection of WV products at the Bent River Trading Company.

To register for the April 28-30 tourney held at Capon Springs & Farm and to find out more about FlingGolf, go to the source, click here. To have fun, all you need is one Flingstick, and to remember to aim high and let it fly!

Jonathan Bellingham is a 3rd generation Capon Springs & Farms co-owner and Director of Guest Relations.  In the FlingGolf world he goes by the nickname:  OctaJon Flingman and currently the 21st ranked US player.  While he has set course records all over the state by “liberating” WV golf courses as the first person to play on that course, his proudest achievement is shooting par on his own home course, twice.  His future goals as an official FlingGolf ambassador are to introduce the sport to Iceland and France when he travels to those places in late spring of 2023.
