Day 1: Morgantown
Regardless if you’ve made the brief 1.5-hour drive from Pittsburgh or you’re flying in from the conveniently located Morgantown Airport, the Monongalia County city of Morgantown is easy to navigate and boasts plenty of Mountaineer adventures to keep you busy.
After settling into the region, you have probably built up an appetite. Head to Terra Cafe for made-from-scratch pastries, sandwiches, soups, salads and much more. After enjoying some locally-made goods, make the short drive to Coopers Rock State Forest, which is less than 15 minutes away. Here you will be greeted by thick forests as well as a scenic overlook, which provides a panoramic view of the Cheat River Gorge and the surrounding mountains. You will also find an Almost Heaven swing along the stone pathway, which is a perfect spot to take your #AlmostHeaven selfie!
For dinner, grab some pub grub at Iron Horse Tavern on High Street, which is located just across the road from historic Hotel Morgan. Have the rest of your evening to spare? Metropolitan Theatre is a hub for drama productions, dance recitals and other activities. If you feel like you haven’t hit all your bases yet, catch a ballgame at the Monongalia County Ballpark during the summer and cheer on the West Virginia Black Bears, an MLB Draft League team.
Day 2: Fairmont
On the second day of your Mountaineer Country exploration, make a quick trip to Marion County’s staple town, Fairmont. This town is nearly the halfway point between Morgantown and Clarksburg along I-79. Start your day shopping at Arts & Antiques Marketplace or make a quick foodie pitstop at Country Club Bakery for one of their famously delicious pepperoni rolls.
Valley Falls State Park is the perfect spot to go hiking, waterfall chasing and picnicking. Ride your mountain bike around the town’s rail trails and check off Valley Falls on the West Virginia Waterfall Trail for a chance to win exclusive West Virginia prizes. Coal Country Mini Golf is likely the most unique miniature golf course you’ll ever see as all the obstacles are made from vintage mining equipment. Want to see a living history museum? Prickett’s Fort State Park is based on an original 18th-century fort and features costumed actors to match the setting.
For dinner, you will be pleasantly surprised by the Italian heritage in Fairmont. Muriale’s Italian Restaurant & Catering specializes in authentic pasta dishes that follow recipes that are several generations old. The homemade bread is a favorite among locals. Colasessano’s is another mainstay with its thick-crusted pizzas and much more. For a 1950s twist, look no further than the Poky Dot and split a nine-pound banana split with your friends!
To extend your stay, rest your head at Heather’s Haven, a cabin rental on the Tygart River. If you’d like to be a little more adventurous with your overnight accommodation, The Tiny Farmhouse at Historical Zion Heritage Farm features one room, a full bathroom and a kitchenette.
Day 3: Clarksburg and Bridgeport
Wrap up your journey on a high note by heading toward Harrison County to explore the charming towns of Clarksburg and Bridgeport, which are just ten minutes apart from one another. Start your day off by exploring the downtown area, dubbed as one of the most historical downtowns in the state. You will find several beautiful 1800s and 1900s-style structures. Visit Watters Smith Memorial State Park to take a peak at pioneer life with a reconstructed homestead. After diving into Clarksburg’s history, jump back into the present and grab some local lunch at Parkette Family Restaurant.
Along with a generous share of big name shopping malls, Clarksburg also has the state’s oldest artisan co-op, West Virginia Heritage Crafts. This offers everything from gourmet jams and jellies to quilted items. For dinner, head to The Wonder Bar Steakhouse, an elevated chop house offering the best steak and seafood in the region. If you’re in the mood for more European flare, Julio’s Cafe serves up delicious Italian classics and offers an extensive wine list. Cody’s Restaurant in Bridgeport is famous for its cocktails and serves up some stellar pub food. If you booked ahead of time, finish your evening by watching live performances at the Robinson Grand Performing Arts Center. Another entertaining option catching a movie at the Sunset Drive-In Theater in nearby Shinnston.
