Leave the Screens at Home & Check Out These Unplugged Adventures in West Virginia

If your goal this summer is to unplug and get outside, then you need to check out these off-the-grid adventures in West Virginia.

📡 Green Bank Observatory

The world’s largest steerable telescope is located in Pocahontas County, WV and is mostly responsible for the lack of internet and cell service in this area. Because of its location, the telescope is within the National Radio Quiet Zone, meaning radio transmissions are heavily restricted by law. This provides a truly off-the-grid experience if you choose to tour the Science Center on-site. Take a guided bus tour of the grounds, explore on your own, or go behind-the-scenes for a high tech tour.

This adventure is the perfect family-friendly learning experience, disconnected for cell service and closer to the stars!

🧗 Seneca Rocks

This jaw-dropping rock formation is the product of an ancient ocean that used to exist in the region. From below, you can enjoy a picnic and a view of the rocks at the Seneca Rocks Discovery Center. If you’re up for a challenge, take the Seneca Rocks Trail to the top of the rocks, but come prepared for the 850 ft incline. For our most daring adventurers, rock climbing expeditions are available. Grocery stores and restaurants are few and far between, making this a true off-the-grid adventure.

🪨 Coopers Rock State Forest

While this overlook is only a few miles from nearby Morgantown, the spotty cell service and sweeping views make it feel like a remote destination. From hiking to climbing, there is an outdoor adventure for anyone in your family at Coopers Rock. However, the easy-to-access overlook is the star of the show. Pack and lunch or bring your favorite book to spend your afternoon enjoying the views of this iconic West Virginia State Forest.

🚂 Cass Scenic Railroad

One of the most relaxing ways to see Almost Heaven is from the seat of a historic train. Nestled in the mountains of Pocahontas County, at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park, you’re far from big cities and closer to nature. Bring the whole family along for a day on the tracks as you wind up and down the hills. Sweeping views will surround you, along with lush green tree lines. Afterwards, wander through the gift shop, grab a bite to eat at the diner, or even stay overnight in an old company house.
